Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow

REVIEWZOR!
Well, I would have written this last night when I saw it, but I was uber-tired and just knocked out when I got home at 2 am.

If you have ever seen any kind of old sci-fi movie that was in black and white, you will know what this movie is like.

Movie is set about 30 years after WWI and the main plotline is that a guy named Totenkoff was some incredible genius, got 2 PHDs by the age of 12, and he's created a bunch of robots that create havoc. That's about all I can say as to not give away the awesome ending.

Throughout the whole movie, the CG effects are awesome. You somewhat get used to them by the end but it's a really nice effect to add to the 'noir'-ish atmosphere of it.

It's kind of corny and kiddy at some parts, but that's what you'd expect as it kind of pokes fun at the early sci-fi robot movies.

Overall: good movie, great CG effects, kinda corny, but it is just a fun movie to see.

I think it looks stupid, but I'm probably going to go see it.

is it in full color, or is it partially black-and-white? I saw a trailer that was in semi-B&W and it looked really cool.

It looks like it is shot in Sepia tones to give it an old fashioned aged celluloid/tintype feel.

Looks to me like it's color, but strongly filtered. I really like the visuals, personally.

One thumb up and one down from Ebert & Roeper. Rotten Tomatos puts it at 75%, a fairly good score from them IMO.

[edit]Apparently it was lit for black and white, then digitally colored (of course, the whole thing is actually CG, minus the actors).

Here's the rottentomatoes site for it: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/sky_captain/

The whole movie was shot on bluescreen, save some tables, cockpits, and other props.

And the fact that there is an army of robots out to destroy mankind doesn't bother you in the least eh?
  • AmbassadorAmbassador Join Date: 2003-02-24 Member: 13942Members
I had the same discussion with a guy at work today. The fact is it's a movie. It's not a historical account, nowhere does it say 'based on a true story' and offer any kind of proof that it's supposed to be anything real. It's supposed to be fun and entertaining, you can't focus on details or historical inaccuracies. You have to just enjoy it!!!!!!

Sort of true, sort of not.

The entire movie was created digitally. There were originally NO plans to have real actors in it, but they changed their minds. So it's not that the movie was CGed around the actors -- it's that the actors were inserted into the CG movie.

on a bluescreen right? because i got the making of disk right here, and they said they filmed it on a bluescreen.
  • coilcoil Amateur pirate. Professional monkey. All pance. Join Date: 2002-04-12 Member: 424Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
Well, yes; that's the way you insert real characters into CG scenes. My point, though, is that the focus of the filmmaking was on the environments. They were never trying to create reality from CG (that's George Lucas's domain) -- they were creating a fictional world, and then decided to put real people there.

Going to see this in an hour and a half, woo!

Slightly different; FF was 100% animated. This uses real actors. And CG has once again progressed substantially.

Of course it uses live actors but I think the FF movie had much better animation than this movie, although both movies had good animation.

Fantastic movie! All the best from classic pulp science fiction; I got to spend 2 hours being 9 years old again. (: For a first-time filmmaker/director, he did a fantastic job.

Just saw the movie; I was reasonably well entertained. I saw those big robots at the beginning and I got huge flashbacks to an old Superman cartoon I saw a while ago. Turns out the robots were based off of that very cartoon.
