Any good? It doesn't seem to like me....
Yes this is sort of a tech support post in disguise, but also to post what you think about DX9.0c, any problems you're having with it e.t.c.

Basically it refuses to install. I've tried getting it off a CD as well as from the web and I get the same thing. It gives me the "Blah blah click here to continue", and when I click there to continue it SEEMS to install just fine except for the fact that it just whizzes by faster than the eye can see and doesn't seem to actually install anything.

So how do I know it doesn't install? Well for a start The Sims 2 tells me in no uncertain terms I don't have it installed (Its my sister's copy I swear), and when I check DXDIAG, sure enough, DirectX version: 9.0b.

The game itself ran fine on our other computer, so what gives? I've heard several people on tech support forums ask the same thing, but none of them have gotten replies.

I've also heard others say that it screwed their graphics up completely, and still others say they get FPS boosts in Farcry and Painkiller. So what's YOUR experience with DX9.0c?

*edit* Yes i've tried restarting *edit*

9.0c works fine for me. Installed it along with WoW.

Have you only been using their retarded web-installer? If so, you might wanna search around for the 30+ MB download that's all the files packaged together.

Well after I formatted and installed XP Pro the first thing I put on was SP2 on disc and Direct x9.0c.

Since then for a few games, new ones that is like Doom3 they have popped up saying I need the latest direct x (9.0b) they promped the installer to start then it finishes without atually doing anything.....

Seems although 9.0c is obviously the next one on from 9.0b some games fail to see that which suggests microsoft have done something wrong.

That, or if you're paying attention to *most* game installers that come with a version of directx nowadays, they don't even check which version you have and just offer to install what they need.

Yep, retarded web installer. Which did not at any point try to connect to the internet. I did find it strange that the installer was only 308kb, guess i'll look for the "real" version.

Now imagine the confusion this would cause a non-technical person who just wanted to get the Sims 2 running, gg Microsoft.

It's done nothing but create problems for me. Older games, like Vice City and Oni would get strange FPS hits, and it didn't help the performance of newer games like Doom 3 at all.

Oh, and SP2 is the devil. It just adds a bunch of worthless new services that you'll want to disable anyway.

I've since reformatted and upgraded from XP Nub (Home) to XP Pro, and I'm currently SP2 and DX 9.0c free.

Yes, but sooner or later you'll need DX9 to play the latest games.

As it is, even the full download does exactly the same thing. Just whizzes by, doesn't actually seem to install anything, and dxdiag still tells me I have DX9.0b installed. Grr.

Having done a bit of research i'm seeing pages all over the place of people with the same problem; apparently it has something to do with the version of DirectX that comes with SP2.

I've read posts about people having to manually copy files over to get dxdiag to finally admit that directx9.0c is installed.

I've tried removing the registry key and then running the installer, to no avail. The installer seems to THINK I have DX9.0c, but that is irrellevant. The installer is not in possetion of the facts. DXDIAG and The Sims 2 both seem to think I don't have it installed, so I have reason to believe the installer is a lying git.

Anyone know a work-around so I can get this working? I know directx is notoriously hard to uninstall.

I have DX 9.0b. I don't even know of any games that require 9.0c to fuction properly. When such a game rolls around, I'll upgrade, but only because I have to.

Well the Sims 2 does, and it doesn't want to let me install dx9.0c NO MATTER WHAT I DO! AAAARGH!

*edit* Note to self: Under no circumstances attempt to uninstall DirectX again. *edit*

I've got a similar problem. The only difference being that Dxdiag says I've got 9.0c and The Sims 2 says that I do not.

Update: I nuked the hard disk and re-installed. It's running fine now.

I think the sims 2 needs the final release of 9.0c, the one that comes with SP2 is a beta version.

Well, by reinstalling SP2 correctly (I let a friend install it while i was out... don't ask) I have 9.0c, although whether I will now run into YOUR problem remains to be seen.

Did you install 9.0c before or after SP2, or do you even have SP2 yet?

So the Sims 2 requires both the newest Directx (9.0c?) and a Direct 9.0 GFX card ?
