I'll admit, Skywalker was a poor choice.

But, those characters weren't meant to be intimidating. They were the heroes. They can have silly names.

Now, look at the villains. Darth Vader. Just say it. It doesn't sound like someone you want to meet. And Emperor Palpatine sounds almost equally impressive.

Then you have Count Dooku. Say it out loud. Now try and look me in the eye and say it has the same effect as "Darth Vader".

i have a challenge for the NS Forums community.

Come up with the best character names for the next Star Wars with equally dubious alliteration and i will give you a gold star for the wall chart. Go forth and make bad jokes worse.

Every Star Wars film was made outside of the Screen Actors Guild.

I'm afraid criticism, both constructive and otherwise is a fact of human nature, and always has been. There's very little you can do about it. However, once you've created something with a huge fan base, tinkering with it even slightly will always bring recriminations. Outright rewriting (which is what's happened) is bound to get these sorts of responses.

As for them being 'his'. Well, only partially, as he didn't direct either Return of the Jedi or Empire Strikes Back, both of which are generally considered to the 'best' of the Star Wars films. Coincidence? I think not. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    a few points:

-it's important for actors to have an Actors' Guild since the MAJORITY of them get paid a pittance. and in order to make something close to a living wage they need to stick together (i.e. semi-unionize).

-many of Lucas' creations are named by his children. so blame them, not him, for the silly not-as-cool-as-you'd-like-it-to-be names.

I was waiting for that point. I was hoping someone brought that up. It really is a shame that some people are so willing to sacrifice their self respect just to get on TV/screen that they undercut the professional actors.

Personally I think Oldman bowed out because he realized that he had just signed up to work for Lucas and play the voice for a CG character.

Because we know how well that worked in the past <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

People can't stand change. If the movie was made as it is now, no one would be complaining. Lucas makes a few general improvements, and the whole world whines about it.

I just watched A new hope for the second time (I'd forgotten everything from my first viewing a long time ago), and I loved it. What arse kickzor. I managed to enjoy the movie, despite Lucas changing it. If you're refusing to buy the DVDs because of a few minor changes, your loss. Like lucas said, you can get the old ones on tape and LD, if you'd like.

I used to browse a fan fic board, (don't ask me why, it's one of my many regrets), and I've seen MUCH worse names then Skywalker. Personally, I love the name Skywalker, it's simple and has a lot of symbolic meaning in it. As for alien names, it's nigh impossible to come up with anything that would sound "evil," because we've got nothing to associate it with. Take for example "Si Ren," which means dead man in chinese. The most westerners got out of it would be siren, a completely wrong association.

    However... Grevious? WTH?!?!

I didn't even like the original Star Wars because it's not sci-fi. Obviously, these new ones suck too. Only they suck even more because they don't have Darth Vader.

The gripes aren't about trivial changes. Some of the disputes were about changes that drastically altered the characters.

    <b>Breaking news. </b>
There was a Sci-fi convention in Australia with the LotR team. Among those there were Sean Astin (Samwise) and John Rhys-Davis (Gimli, Treebeard).

Now here's the clincher. When someone asked whether Rhys-Davis is going to do any more voiceovers ala Treeboard, here was his response:

I...I think he meant that figuratively. Darth Vader "killed" Anakin. Because the Darth side of Anakin's personality overpowered the Anakin side. And in the end,

    ( I shouldnt have to mark this, but) <span style='font-family:Optima'><span style='font-size:30pt;line-height:100%'><span style='color:red'>SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS</span></span></span>

when Anakin comes back to help Luke fight the Emperor (the Anakin side wins out over the Darth side), it's in the old Anakin's body. He died in the body of an old man. He wasn't dead earlier, he was just...not in control. At least so I think.
