oberheating :s
yeah im having some BIG heating issues.. its fine on normal windows and some tougher apps like photoshop...

but when i play any games... after like 15 mins it shuts off.. the pc just dies.. and i gotta leave it for a while.. now i heard this is cos at80 deg it autoshuts off to protect the system.. so i ran SiSandra and it said 71 degrees... ouch.

but yeah i think**** i have narrowed it down to the graphics i run 2 monitors...

1, normal 21" monitor
2, Svideo into adapter into composite cable into 32" tv

could that be why its overheating? i leave it on all the time? my graphics card has NO fan..

so no means of cooling.. just a big heatsink and a golden heatpipe...

i had an X800 XT but i had to give that back... cos i really couldnt afford it lol...

so yeah on my old card... Radeon 9600 XT Ultimate

gfx card

so yeah i need somebody clever's help.. could that be it? or is there something FUBAR in my box?

If it has no fan, you need one.

    Fast.

Next thing you know, you'll be cooking eggs with it o_O

Alternatively you could NO WAIT GO GET A FRICKEN FAN. Geez. If its overheating you certainly need one.

If the card didn't come with a fan then it doesn't need one if you keep it at stock speeds. The companies do lots of testing on these sorts of things.

Running two monitors might make the difference. The easy way to test is unplug one of them and play some games. If your computer still shuts down then it's not your GFX card.

To see if it's still a heat related problem, open the side of your case and get a portable fan to blow air through the case. If this fixes your problem you know you need to buy some more fans.

Give it a go and tell us what happens...

I can't seem to get the picture of your card on the website you posted but I find it hard to believe that a 9600XT doesn't have a fan. The XT version was supposed to be designed to overclock.

Regardless, you could try an expansion slot fan like this one from Antec. Just put it in the next slot below your video card.
You could also start adding extra case fans to move air through the whole system.

Sapphire are well known for having fanless cards.

Also, XTs aren't made to be overclocked, they just come clocked higher than your standard card.

When you ran Sandra what was 71C? The processor? If it was that then you need better ventilation in your case or a better cpu heatsink and fan.
Your pc wont shut down if its just your graphics card overheating, the heat from the card is probably just building up in the case and eventually the cpu fan will be blowing hot hair over your processor causing that to heat up.

See if your mobo has a second temperature probe to see what temp the general case is at. If thats warm(over 45 (maybe) degrees) then you need case fans to get rid of the heat given off by your other componants.
Getting a fan on your graphics card, which you can do (it says at the bottom the the specs "Silent cooling solution with optional fan") will only blow the warm air around a little, wont actually get rid of it.

Maybe you could look into buying one of those small fans that plug into your PCI slot and are really good for getting extra heat off gfx cards.

Is the inside of you pc case a bit cluttered at all m8? as this coul restrict air flow quite a lot.

This is a problem I had and it caused my old geforce 4 to burn out (thank god for the reciept)

Thats not always true. I saw a 9800 Pro with a giant sink on it that ran cooler than my artic silver+ vga silencer 9800 pro..

However, remove the fan and sink on said video card, apply some arctic silver or buy a vga silencer, if that dosent work invest in a new power supply.

My Sapphire card doesn't have a fan either. It has this heat thing on the top and bottom and a gold coloured pipe running between them. Looks as sexy as hell I've not had any problems with it so far.

I have 1 word for you: AIRFLOW. Airflow and cooling are the 2 most important things that you can do to keep your computer running at optimal temperatures. On this matter, however, I tend to agree with Daedalus. If your video card came without a fan, then you probably dont need one. However, getting some extra fans wouldn't hurt either.

The water gets pumped away to be replaced by cool water rinse an repeat over and over.
