The general practice is to chose a random color, make the desktop that color, and then overlay everything the computer is rendering that color with an animation of some sort.

Perhaps an LCD looking clock with Skulks instead of the diodes? It wouldn't be that hard to get some pretty neat images. Just some pics of skulks standing in a specific pattern. I will setup an FTP server when I get home to collect source files.

edit: Some possible format suggestions would be good as well. This one was done in Flash but I am sure there are more desktop friendly versions.

Set up a video camera on an appropriate backdrop. Film the backdrop with no movement for a few seconds. Have the person with the number 1 walk in from the right. face the camera to show the number, and walk off to the left. wait 1 second between people. Then have the next person walk in from the right and repeat. If you do it in this pattern I can manipulate it to make it look seamless when animated.
Another option is to have people enter the FOV from the right and stay in the middle. 1 person, 2 people, 3, etc. At the end, everyone walk off to the left and film the backdrop with no movement for a second or two.
Once you do this, send the source video to me and I'll take care of manipulating it and code it into a chronograph.
