"I'm a huge fan of yours Al, and I feel i have no place left to turn for advice. My son is 15 and spends all his time playing a game called "Science & Industry" for the computer. In this game, he's encouraged to kidnap scientists from opposing players in order to research violent weapons! Not only this, but it directly conflicts with the teachings of the Lord, because if you are "killed" by another player, you are able to come back to life instantly by means of human cloning! This is really preturbing me, i tried to get him to stop playing, for his sake, but he's too engrossed, he says "the high speed gameplay is top notch", rest assured i'm praying for answers but a little human advice couldn't hurt.

Dear Maryjane,
Since I don't know your family or your relationship with your son, let me offer some general suggestions.
1. Read our "10 Steps..." article listed under foundational articles on our website.
2. Following the suggestions in the article, set guidelines for entertainment that you can live with.
3. Explain them to your son and ask him if he understands them. Remember this is done in love and kindness in your voice.
4. Follow through on the discipline you decided on to encourage your son to stay within the guidelines. Remember rules without a relationship will lead to rebellion. And also, remember if he doesn't obey your rules he is running the household - not you.
5. A possible guideline would be for your son to spend an equal amount of time reading as he spends playing games and watching TV. While I am concerned about violent games, I am more concerned about the unlimited amount of time children play video games. Many young men learn to "live in cyberspace" and never learn how to live in reality. They can communicate with computer pixels and don't know how to communicate with humans. I hope that these suggestions help. Please keep me informed. I care.

"I sat down to check some of my links for validity and 30 minutes later I am still stuck on your site sifting through different media reviews. I recently tossed a lot the violent games in the trash. Hexen, Doom, Quake III and Unreal Tournament were among the casualties. Since then I've been looking for game titles to fill the void, so to speak. I've been browsing some of the sampler CD's that I've accumulated over the years and found Age of Empires. I decided to drop in and check out what you had to say on this and similar titles. I love these types of games. I have a 5 year old son that wants to play anything that Daddy plays. (He loves Riven.) I also have a 2 year old daughter and I long to hold each of them to a higher standard of morality. Lately we have just been sticking to driving games as opposed to the "lock and load" variety. Anyway.

Ever since the events of 9-11, many people have associated the words "Muslim" and "Arab" with the word "terrorist". The GLA terrorists look and sound like Muslim Arabs. This could influence people in their views towards these people and could help create even stronger stereotypes against them.
As you go about destroying your opponents, you will decimate their bases, blow their mechanical units up, and kill their infantry. There is no blood or gore when you kill infantry units. When you play the GLA Campaign, there are a few times in which, in the cut scenes, GLA kill a mass number of civilians.
Making peace with your enemies is a concept that is completely foreign to this game.

I saw this site 3 years ago, and just laughed and shared with my friends its existance and simply chuckled. Im christian, and I apologize on our behalf. In fact, my friend's CATHOLIC MINISTER players Doom 3 for fun.
