Okm I have narrowed it down to these 2 laptops (mainly for the reason that I get very good discounts on them):

1. Averatec 6130H
P4 3.0 w/HT
15.4 WXGA
512 Ram
Radeon 9600 64 meg
40 gig HDD
802.11g
DVD/CD-RW
7,7 pounds

2. Toshiba A70-TS1
P4 3.0
15.4 WXGA
512 Ram
Radeon 9000 64 meg
60 gig HDD
802.11g
DVD/CD-RW
6,5 pounds

Price is not an issue here as they come out almost identicle (and my parents are paying for a good chunk of it ). The averatec is less known, but has a bit better video card making it a better all around laptop. Toshiba has the better name and reliability behind it with a bigger HDD. If anyone knows any models similiar to this that also use a centrino or mobile processor giving me the better battery life, please let me know. Otherwise I am looking for input between these 2 models, thanks!

What are the speeds on those hard drives? And definitely go for the best graphics card you can find. I have a Mobility 9000 its the worst POS.

I'd say get the first one.
But then again, this is coming from some guy who has absolutely no experience in laptops whatsoever

    The second one is better.

But a P4 northwood laptop coupled with 512 RAM and a pretty decent mobile video card?

Good luck getting an hour's worth of juice from your battery...

    40 gig hard drive? Ouch.

Other than that, the first one looks grand.

Do you already have a decent desktop? (i.e. one that is better in specs than either of those two choices)

If so, go for the lighter of the two. Trust me, you won't regret it.

Go with the 9600 if you ever want to be able to touch any game with that laptop. The 9000 is a terrible, terrible card, the second one might have more hd space, but you can always buy a new hd, you can't easily upgrade the gfx cards for laptops.

If at all possible get a 9700 - with the 9800 out it could be cheap enought tp afford.

Don't need an uber gaming laptop, my PC is fine for that, this is more a workhorse, soa 9700 or such is pointless to me.
