Smoking

<div class="IPBDescription">good or bad?</div> ok granted smoking does apprently take off 10years of your life, and can inflict different cancerous diseases, but like my mum said to me everyone has cancer in your its weather it gets brought out and affects u, smoking merely helps the process of cancer, but back to the main smoking part

<b>good or bad?</b>

its "apparently" classed as an anti-social thing to do but thats not true as alot of people do smoke and people you dont even know will sometimes ask for a cigarette, and if you chat to them you just gained another friend, so although there are pro's and cons to smoking, i dont think its any real threat.

whats your view on this?

I don't smoke myself, and I don't like cigerretes at all for a number of reasons; however, if people want to smoke, let them smoke. As long as they don't do it in a public place (bus, train, waiting room etc.), it's okay by me. Just be aware that it does impact on your health.

people don't all "have cancer", as such.

a "cancer" is when the cells mutate and the messenger RNA doesn't carry the correct coding to know when to stop reproducing the cell, thus the cell keeps multiplying to the point where it becomes an obstruction in your body [a tumor].

at least that is what i remember from yr10 genetics...

well if thats true and it sounds a stable theory so u have a good memory, then smoking doesn't seem to really have anything to do with cancer whatso ever. unless its the tar that stops the coding being sent which in that case whould mean yes it results in cancer

When looking at it from the chemical side eating 20 cigs at a whole will put you dead, permanently.
Nicotion is basically a herbicid and thus will put you to peace, when comsumed in a dosis that is equall to 20 cigs. (thats if you are of average weight/height)

Ever kissed a smoker? Just try licking an ash-tray! Its disgusting.

cigarettes have more than tar in them. i don't know specifically what it is that causes the different types of cancer, but i assume that either there is something in it that causes mutation in the coding, or that it merely f*ks with your system so much that the body can't deal with it and the cancer; i'm pretty sure that there is an "active ingredient" though.

You won't necessarily get cancer, but you will suffer in some way. Your circulation system or lungs might not be able to cope, for example. There are plenty other risks. It's up to you whether to take them or not. Just don't say that you were never warned.
  • Ice-PhoenixIce-Phoenix Join Date: 2004-09-18 Member: 31775Members
yea thats true, i knew what could happen when i took the risk of starting and you could all rally to get me to stop which would be funny and unlikely to happen, but you lot have a good point and it is more then tar theres about 70 different chemicals in a ciggarette if i rember correctly

no one has ever tried to dispute that smoking was bad for you, only the cig companies tried to say that it wasn't addictive.

simplest way to look at it:
Do you know why people die in a house fire?
No they don't burn, they die of asphixiation from smoke inhalation.

Combine the fact that inhaling smoke is just bad for you with thefactor that you are putting tar into your system (tar dosn't leave) + Nicotine (an addictive drug) + What ever other chemicals are in there, and the fact that it is known that smoking causes cancer and you got it. Cigs are bad for you.

Not only that but they smell like crap to nonsmokers, they make you look fuggly (yellow teeth != attractive), they make you smell bad, etc etc.

    but you know what?
If some one wants to smoke, fine by me, so long as they are nice enugh to not do it around me when I ask em not to.
  • Ice-PhoenixIce-Phoenix Join Date: 2004-09-18 Member: 31775Members
see thats understandable.. granted if you brush your teeth then you dont have to worry about yellow teeth well not really bad case of it anyway, but the main point is aslong as theres a mutual respect between smokers and non-smokers , then everythings ok

It depends entirely on what you smoke.

Your standard cigarette smoker = the gross.

However, a nice pipe or cigar every once in a while - mmmm. Top it off with a 1/2 glass of your favorite scotch, and you got yourself a 45 min trip to heaven.

Good... or bad... To put it this way: You can get social contact with other smokers very easily, but it costs you. Specifically, it taxes your body. If you do it for long, you end up rather unattractive.
Smoking just because you're used to it/smoking out of habit... those are not good reasons.

I'm never going to encourage smoking, simply because the cost is too high for the "reward".

I can only say that as a passive smoker, I greatly, MASSIVELY prefer pipe smokers to cigarette smokers. I don't know if it's the paper, or if cigarettes just get the leftovers after the good tobacco has gone to pipes and cigars, but cigarette smoke stinks and bites the eyes and nose in a way that pipe tobacco doesn't. If you gotta smoke, think of the nonsmokers and smoke a pipe instead of cigarettes. It's the polite and nice thing to do. There's no use in being buddies with all the smokers if you alienate the non-smokers.

ok i'll take it into consideration altho i'm about 17 soo i'd rather not smoke a pipe if i dont have to, dont want the old man image..despite occasional whiskey drink o.O

That's where you have to be able to answer back. "I've chosen the pipe out of consideration for the non-smokers." If you're smoking just to be cool, you're doing it for all the wrong reasons.

The possible side effects of smoking (or chewing, or whatever) can get pretty grim. The buzz it gives you is just about non-existant, but then later you get off on the high of feeding an addiction.

Tobacco has the worst cost/benefit ratio of any common drug, I'd say. It's a poor choice if you're going to consume something for pleasure.

No recreational drugs at all is preferable as far as health goes, naturally, but tobacco is just dumb.

edit: oops 2 random characters slipped in there.

I enjoy cigars from time to time. I don't think that I could ever really enjoy cigarettes. They're done so fast and you see people standing there trying to get it down as fast as possible. Cigars, on the other hand, you enjoy. You take your time, roll the smoke around in your mouth and enjoy the flavor. They're great after a nice steak dinner with a good, stiff drink. I like to have a nice scotch or whiskey. A good vodka martini can be good with them too, provided you invest in some decent alcohol. If you get the cheap stuff, you might as well be drinking Bud Light.

I picked up the habit when I graduated from high school. I was always fascinated by cigars and my dad got be a box of Cubans as a graduation present. Man, those were a fantastic smoke. Later when I was in the Army, cigars were part of the tanker image. You go tearassing around the place, sitting up out of the turret with a cigar clenched in your teeth and think "This is what Patton must have felt like." When we did that, we were the lords of all we surveyed.

Now I smoke probably once every other month. Most of the cigars I smoke cost more than two packs of cigarettes, so it's just too expensive to do a lot.

just wait till your 18, and then go and buy a glass pipe from a smokeshop for like 15 bucks, that should rid yourself of the old fogey imprint, not to mention tobacco smoking will become alot cheaper

Actually a single stray photon could give you cancer. It's a matter of luck and probability.

well i aint like that if i'm around people that mind me smoking i wont smoke there, i'll go outside for a cigarette etc, besides i've had to limit myself to smoking roll-ups, which although you end up getting bits of tabacco in your mouth(sometimes) and it stains your fingers!! its a hell of alot cheaper, but you need a pack of cigs if your going out , cos well you dont want to sit around wereever u went and make a roll-up

EDIT: oh yea and i dont smoke to be cool lolfighter thats a terrible reason, i mean honestly there is no GOOD reason to start and mines no better then anyone elses but it werent to be cool, and it had nothing to do with peer pressure i decided to do it on my own for certain reasons

I occasionally smoke cloves (also called 'djarum') - a pack lasts me about two months. It's a very sweet, spicy cigarette, a bit shorter, though worse for your lungs as there's some sort of fiberglass or something in them (can't remember exactly atm). I hate normal cigarettes' smell and taste - for some reason smoking cloves helps me calm down sometimes, like before an important exam or meeting or something.

Smoking's pretty bad in a lot of ways - cancer, stinks up pretty much everything (including your body - clothes, anything you touch...), it's a health risk to OTHER people... which is why I don't smoke in the presence of nonsmokers. It's terribly bad manners - health risks aside it's an irritant to their bodies.

To me, it's like any other rec drug - it's your right to screw with your body if you wish, AS LONG AS IT DOESN'T HURT ANYONE ELSE, which means setting controls - namely, doing it in private settings. Except for horrible drugs that screw with your mind and make you go out and potentially hurt people or destroy property, in which case you should be strapped down beforehand if you want to take it.

At my "band's" practices every week, I used to come home reeking of cigarettes and cloves. Worst combination ever. Cloves are a little more tolerable than cigarettes for us non-smokers (since they don't smell quite as bad) but when the two are used akimbo, it's just terrible.

No matter what anyone says, most people pick up smoking because it "looks cool." But seriously, if you're going to do something for looks, at least do something classy like smoke a cigar or a pipe.

I used to have serious asthma, and although it has mostly cleared up due to conditioning (swimming and cross country running), I can still count on cigarette/tabacco smoke to trigger it. If people wish to smoke in their own homes, or in designated areas, that is fine by me, they may have that freedom, but I believe we should also have the freedom to breathe clean air. The problem is not those who smoke, but those who smoke publically or without due consideration. I do acknowledge that it is habit-forming, and I have great respect for those who try to stop.

As Athena says, you are entitled to do whatever you like within the law in your own home, but do not feel that you are entitled to do it in company. The Irish have already banned smoking in bars and public houses, as have some UK establishments, I would liek that to be extended to all public areas.

Smoked 2 packs a day for 30 years, quit cold turkey, dropped 50 pounds in 5 months, then ran 7 marathons in 4 years.

Do I feel better? What do <b>YOU</b> think? Just ... say ... no to one nasty habit.
