I do use firefox, IE is not the only program which displays jpegs using the GDI library. Microsoft Office, outlook express and Visual Studio .net do too, maybe more...

Yes of course this exploit was found after SP2 was released. SP2 has lots of extra security features in general to tackle all sorts of viruses/worms. For starters it enables critical updates to be automatically downloaded and installed. All these normal users that haven't installed SP2 might not even realise there is new critical updates last week. I'm not talking about the tech savvy people among us of course.

For that matter, the vast majority of this "Free Third Party Software" has more potenial security issues. Its just thier not important or widespread enough to attempt hacking.
I've installed it on my laptop with no issues. I'm delaying installing it on my desktop till I can get a DVD-Burner to backup my data first.

My time spent fixing my vital laptop is also worth something, and it's not a risk I need to or want to take. If even 10% of people who have very bad problems, that is far too much for me.
And I don't mean go and download some junk just because it isn't from M$. There are solutions that are designed to be secure from the ground up, rather than trying to patch them until they're good enough. Some people actually want good things, therefore make it themselves. Money is a poor motivation for security.
And explorer (windows explorer, the thing that shows you your files and more importantly img previews, not internet explorer) would also be vulnerable. It's challenging to avoid using that (and I don't trust just turning off previews), so the GDI patch is vital.
Anyone who has VS .net (an expensive programming tool) installed should be competant enough to handle patching their computers. If they're not... well chances are they're the guys who give us all the problems to start with, so no pity here.
SP2 is a very nice update. I've had zero problems with it, and have heard of only 1 problem with SP2 that was actually microsoft's fault. All other complaints I've heard have been caused by user or 3rd party software.

Haven't had any problems with SP2. It actually fixed my problem with not being up to use my mic on any other programs if I run Ventrilo first. Thank god I didn't buy a new soundcard. <!--emo&::marine::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/marine.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='marine.gif' /><!--endemo-->

lets see...
Open Office > Microsoft Office
Thunderbird > Outlook Express
Visual Studio .net...... wait, WTH is that?

Instead of the call for help that the subject implies it was simply a whine.
Now it's degrading into "mine is better than yours".
Therefore, topic closed. Move on.
