<div class="IPBDescription">Sometimes you just gotta cut it</div>Everyone is complaining that NS lags. Lag this lag that, and some are even saying that it is the netcode, etc. Well, actually, NS is just a highly CPU intensive mod. Probably triple the amount of CPU proccessing takes place that would happen with a CS server. The point is server admins that you gotta know when your player max is too high. We all like to think that our server can handle it all, but it can't. We can't have 20-32 player max servers very much with this mod. I have mine set to maxplayer 8. It sounds sad, but when you weigh the benefits to the disadvanteges, it is definitely better to have a small player max. I have a 933 mhz with 384 RAM on a T1 connection. I can't tell you how many times people have joined my server and said "WOW, a server that finally doesn't lag all to heck!!" Set it low guys, and then some more. Also, you can't base it all on what your CPU usage is at the beginning, all those buildings, especially the turrets, use up a ton of processing, and there can be tons of them by the end of the map. Do the math based of what I have for my server and honestly figure out what maxplayers you should have for your server. I used to run a 20 maxplayers CS server, with no lag. I can only handly 8 for an NS server, and by the end of a map, the CPU usage is at 90%. It's not the game, its our maxplayers limit. Let's fix it so that people can quit complaining and start having some fun! Oh, and this is a really cool mod!!!!

    i have an alienware laptop

    2.0ghz p4
    512 ddr ram

    10mbit .edu connection

and i've never heard anything from anyone that mine isn't the best or in the top 3 before.
also there are games that are much more cpu intensive that work just fine. There is a bottle neck that is a fact.

40 at a full server? I got a 2.4 gHz PIV (Icky) and if anyone joins they ping 100 at least. And I have cable.

cpu overload? not really much of a problem here, I'm on dual athlons and a cable. normal windows barely use 0.5% of the cpu, CS takes up 50% on one of em, haven't clocked NS yet but it should be relatively 50% too, but I can spare it, just need for someone to respond weather or not dedicated servers run with a firewall on and weather or not you can join in from same comp and I'll be happy as a jiffy and get a 32 player server up.

Don't be so sure of that 32 person server. I ran a 22 person CS server on an Athlon 2100 w/ 512Megs PC2700 RAM running linux and it barely took up 10% of my cpu. Now I run a 17 person ns server on the same rig and it consistantly hits 90%+ cpu load. Mem usage isn't bad though.

CPU/NET graphs for 2x16 player NS linux servers compare with 32 player DOD server

How is that possible. The XP2700 is not even for sale yet. If you actually have this rig, I'm quite impressed. With 166mhz FSB that machine owns a P4 2.53ghz machine in many test.

You sure you aren't running a 2600? the 2700 is a WHOLE new chip...
