y'know it's easy to say what you'd really really like to make until you honestly have all the resources to 100% make it. When there's no uncertainty and you know you could craft something you suddenly realise how many game ideas you've actually got and how trying to fit them all in one game would be self-destructive as half of them are polar opposites or just don't mesh.
I'd love to make a survival horror, a battle game, an MMO with a mix of player and character skill, a 2D platform shootemup, etc
The only thing all my ideas have in common is that they're multiplayer
Nearly 2000 years ago, a Roman named Heron invented, among other things, the first steam engine, called an aeolipile. It was only a ball with two spouts, that contained water, and, when the water boiled, the steam shot out, causing the sphere to rotate. It was considered no more than a toy.
In the world of the game, however, Heron made the connection between this, and his knoweledge of pistons, pumps, and so forth. In the first century, Rome industrialized. Steel was invented. Factories were constructed. Within two decades, the world saw the first rail-road.
With this new found technology came weapons. Mining was made easier by the new machines. Rare chemicals could be extracted. Rome swept through Europe, utilizing steam-powered mounted automatic weapons, and primitive rocketry. Realizing that there must surely be an easier way of firing projectiles, Rome kidnapped several Chinese alchemists, and soon had gun powder.
And, with this act, the Chinese themselves began an effort to industrialize. Soon, they had formed an alliance with the Russians, Indians, and Japanese. Now, both sides had access to steam power and guns.
Players would configure their character, and fight in one of the factions. Most battles would take place in Africa, with the Chinese Alliance storming the coast, and the Romans pushing down from the top.
The other theatre would be North America. The Chinese would control most of the pacific coast, with the large militaristic cities on the edge, and slowly becoming less and less dense further inland. The same would be true of the Romans, except that they would come by way of the Atlantic, and colonize the East coast. Most of the fighting would be focused on the central area of what would have become the United States.
The game would take place around the third century. It would be very Steam-punk, but not mideval at all. Horses and rickety "tanks" would go into battle together.
There could also be other factions, such as Africans and Native Americans, who would use their knowledge of the land and human will to repel the invading industrialists.

Unfortunately, the only skill I have that's related to the project (aside from thinking it up) is level editing, which is the last thing you really need for a mod.
However, my craptastic Visual Basic RPG is well underway.
I also have an idea for creating an underground civilization game. Where you dig under the ground and can sell minerals to the surface until you can become self sufficient and learn to create enough energy to make your food and stuff. Then you could try to take over the surface world or something or just create an underground Utopia. More SimCity like than Civilization like - I suppose.
There are several types of games I've been spinning in my head.
Japanese style adventure with RPG elements:
A while back (when PSX was still hot) I had this idea for a Japanese style RPG adventure (Ooh! How original!). I thought about the general "feel" of the game, even did some songs for it with tracker software. I didn't figure out the story, but it would've taken place on this huge tower-like city, divided in levels. Something between a Middle-Eastern mountain fortress (I know there's one in Israel at least) and that huge spaceport city found in Star Wars books and comics, forgot the name... In the city, a person's social status would define where they lived. The lower half of the city would be abandoned and forbidden, yet the poorest of the poor would sometimes occupy the first few lower levels.
Of course, in a classical anime style story style, the story would involve at least two persons of different social class, and there'd be something down the forbidden levels, people disappearing and stuff. Could have something to do with player characters being fugitive and being driven to the lower levels, maybe finding something huge there (after fighting and escaping mutants and monsters!) like a way to better the lives of everyone in the city! And then the higher-ups who want to exploit the lower social class try to stop them! And stuff! Classic adventure stuff!
A battle system taking elements from both Grandia 2 and tactical RPGs would be nice, allowing taking advantage of terrain etc.
Anime style mecha battle game:
One other idea would be a more-action-less-sim mecha fighting game with emphasis on multiplayer. Maybe mission-based multiplayer instead of plain deathmach. The main point would be an extensive array of different parts, weapons, armor, accessories for the mechas that would affect the performance and attributes of them. For example, in the style of Armored Core, different leg configurations (humanoid, "chicken leg", spider legs, hovering)..
Also, intuitive control mechanics, that would still allow complex action, would be present. The "moves" your mecha would obviously be dependent on the equipment you have on. You could have a fast "ninja" mecha with a light chassis, jump boosters, humanoid legs, a light machine gun and a laser sword of sorts. That could do all kinds of anime style acrobatic moves. Or you could have a hulking giant with 4 or 8 legs and a huge armament of heavy railguns and rockets! Whee!
Then you'd have huge maps with desert settings, bombed-out cities etc.! Anime mecha fight goodness!
Of course, one of the biggest challenges would be balancing out the different parts, making up rules which parts can be integrated with what other parts, weight regulations etc. etc. Then you'd have to make maps so that a smart player can, if given a chance, use the terrain to his advantage to take out a mech that he'd lose to on open ground... It'd be pretty hard.

The Internet:
I've been pondering this for a while. It would be a MMOG... just picture The Internet, but in 3D!
You could buy cool futuristic cars to travel the information super highway - you could battle popup ads with your friends, or just chill and browse for some porn. IN 3D!
An FPS/Third personhack'n'slash game, based on full-scale war.
So like BF1942, but with thouseands of players on a single map, with battles lasting days, like in real life. Spreading from Roman times(or before) up to modern/near(ish) future.
Imagine something like the loading screen for Battle of Britain map on BF1942, seeing all those bombers coming to rape you, then seeing all the Flak flying into the sky.... would be incredible.
Or being part of one of those full scale roman wars.
THAT would be the kind of game i want
[EDIT:]And could have battles with an NS theme. With huge pterodactyl-esque birds, picking up and eating mechs. And other stuff(you get the picture)

i'd make a fast-paced online fps situated in the near future, 20 or so years. of course the world would be in pieces and youd have to fight in destroyed metropolises and such.
Side scrolling linear 3D shooter with a control style similar to Soldat, featuring a full-fledged weapon melee system. Enemies would go by the theory quantity over quality, as an example of this, see Serious Sam, Doom, and Painkiller.
You'd be a fast-moving mech.
I would make it simply because I would love it so much.
Sonic Mayhem and Kevin Riepl could team up to make the music!

There should be one massive array of servers, all supporting one big game.
Every time one battle finished, it would move onto the next one, or maybe just the next era.
Maybe not WWI, the trench warfare would be a bit boring. But imagine D-Day, or a sea battle, or pearl harbour.

I would make an RPG\shooter set in the modern day (I've never actually seen an RPG with a modern setting). It would also have tactical shooter elements, in that you'd have a squad (of probably 5 or 6). You would be able to order them to fire at either point targets or area targets, allowing them to lay down both covering and suppressing fire. You would also be able to make them take cover behind any object\building, and order them into formations like skirmisher, echelon, etc.
There would be a large array of weapons available, including assault rifles, sub-machine guns, machine guns, sniper rifles, pistols, shotguns, LAWs, RPGs, etc. Every weapon would serve a useful purpose in your squad. There would also be weight and fatigue systems, so the more you (or a member of your squad) carries, the faster they get worn out and the slower they move. You would have to stop occasionally to set up camp and go to sleep.
The game would also involve a system of trust. If you blindly ordered your squadmates around, sending them into very dangerous situations, they would trust you less and may not comply with some of your orders. However, if you take good care of them, they will have near-complete faith in you as their commander. Their attitude towards you would also depend simply on how much they like you. If you were a bastard to them in conversations, and didn't give them enough food, etc. they would like you less.
You and every squad member would have to eat and drink to stay alive, like in Stalker. There would also be conversations between you and the squadmates, and amongst themselves. Every single person would build up an impression of one another (also like in Stalker).
There would also be a system of morale. If your squad has been well-fed and have been largely successful, they'll fight better. There would be ways to boost morale as well, such as buying them some whisky, buying them books, etc.
Skills would advance in many different areas, including charisma, strength, fitness, pistol\rifle\automatic\machine gun\rocket proficiency, etc.
The game would use realistic physics, and a complete weather system (it rains\snows etc. depending on where you are in the world and what the time of year it is). There would be day\night\season cycles. There would be small details, such as rain slightly decreasing morale (that of your squad and your enemies).
The game would use a constant first-person perspective, with no cutscenes (like Half-Life). There would, however, be contextually-sensitive music (like in No One Lives Forever). The majority of the game would be taken up by exploration and conversation. It would be an epic, globe-spanning adventure, where you visist most continents in the world (N America, S America, Europe, Asia, Africa). Each location would be huge, perhaps around 40 sq. kilometers. These areas would be full of towns and cities, forests, mountains, civilians, and enemies. Music would be different depending on where in the world you are.
I have no idea what the plot would be at this moment.
Anyone ever play Scorched Earth (or a similar game)? Everyone has a tank on a 2d screen, and you choose the power and angle and you try to kill all your opponents.
What if a game was made that was done from the tank's point of view? Perhaps you would also see the top-view (and where you are pointing). The fun part isn't just killing the other tanks, it is buying new weapons when you get money from killing tanks each round. You could raise shields, or shoot out "nukes" or "MIRVs" etc. I think it'd be great fun.
How about "Barbie goes Rambo!" You have to dress barbie in the most fashionable army fatigue collections you can get and then slaughter you way through deep jungles, urban warzones and a host of other exotic locations using your supermodel moves, several tons of ammunition and a really big knife. You can also collect the soldiers uniforms to augment your current outfit XD
To win the game you have to find out where they're holding ken captive
I would make an FPS/MMORPG/RTS hybrid game. It would be very complicated but I think that it would make a good game. Here is what I would do with the elements of the game to make it stand out:
FPS: Self-Explanitory.
MMORPG: Massive online capabilities! Character stats, upgrades, etc. Ability to create guilds/spec ops groups and stuff. Also, you get to design a base of operations.
RTS: Field commanding, directing troops over an expansive virtual battlefield.

Yeah, but not just Rome, WWI/WWII too.
There should be one massive array of servers, all supporting one big game.
Every time one battle finished, it would move onto the next one, or maybe just the next era.
Maybe not WWI, the trench warfare would be a bit boring. But imagine D-Day, or a sea battle, or pearl harbour.

They did have the WW2 Online game a while back. I think it had 1000 people at one time. But it was buggy and poorly made...
It had a a decent MMOG premise though...
What do you think? Overambitious, dumb, good?
What if a game was made that was done from the tank's point of view? Perhaps you would also see the top-view (and where you are pointing). The fun part isn't just killing the other tanks, it is buying new weapons when you get money from killing tanks each round. You could raise shields, or shoot out "nukes" or "MIRVs" etc. I think it'd be great fun.
You have to dress barbie in the most fashionable army fatigue collections you can get and then slaughter you way through deep jungles, urban warzones and a host of other exotic locations using your supermodel moves, several tons of ammunition and a really big knife.
You can also collect the soldiers uniforms to augment your current outfit XD
To win the game you have to find out where they're holding ken captive
