Gits2: Innocence

... now that some of you have seen it
There was thread about Ghost in the Shell 2 a few weeks ago, but that was a day before the movie came out. Assuming that some of you have seen it, what were your impressions?

note: minor spoilers, no big giveaways though.

Personally, I'd rate it pretty damn high on my list of utterly senseless movies I've ever enjoyed. The animation is stunning, and the use of 3d scenes excellent. Visually, nothing compares to it. It inherits some of the hallmarks of the original, in particular, the seemingly pointless but fantastic sequence of cityscapes halfway through the movie and of course, the robot-incarnation scene with which the movie kicks things off. Unlike the original however, it makes as much intellectual sense as a stick of gum.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that the original made good sense, in fact, it took me three tries before I could fully comprehend the plot and philosophy behind it, but Innocence is like Goliath to David when compared with the original. It might've been the part where some droid commits digital sepuku for reasons that are beyond even the movie itself (or maybe I just never figured it out), or maybe it was when the same damn scene repeats itself three times in a row, (you'll know it when you see it) but somewhere along the movie, my brain stopped trying to figure things out and went into "WTH" mode for the rest of the 2 or so hours.

I think one of the reviews I read said it best: If you understood this movie, then you should expect to be immediately granted a master's degree in extistentialist philosophy.

I'm not trying to discourage people from seeing it (if you haven't already), but if anyone can help me make some sense of the plot and philosophy of this movie, then you'll not only recieve my eternal thanks, but my respect as perhaps one of the most intelligent men (or women) alive as well.

I thought it was alright - graphics were great. Story was so-so. I liked the series a lot better.
But yeah, the philosphy of it was pretty wicked.

'Gits2: Innocence' sounds like a bunch of dorky british teenage boys on a quest to get laid... but since they failed the first time, here's the sequel! Oh well.

I liked Ghost in the Shell. I may even have adored it at some point. Then I grew tired of it. Maybe I should've watched the series or read the comics or something to keep me interested. I like existentialism though. Will give this a shot if I get the chance.

I liked the movie, it didn't have that certain spark like the original did but was a VERY good movie on it's own. Most of this is because it doesn't feature Major Makoto. Overall I think it's one of the best animes i've seen in a long while. So it's a good watch.

BTW BATOU'S DOG IS DONE PERFECTLY!

    Philosophy?

You transfer your mind to a robot body or the internet, and you're still human.
You create an advanced artificial intelligence, and it's different but equal.
    Whoop-de-f***in'-do.

I already had my ideas sorted, so neither of the GITS movies were very impressive in that department.

Don't get me wrong, they're great movies, but I don't get why people think the philosophy of them is so advanced.

[edit] Oh yea, did they have that annoying hi-pitched chorus again in Innocence? I'm not so sure I want to see if it they're back. [/edit]

I think it lacks story. Maybe I didn't really get it because the subbing I watched was crap. Anyway, if you put away the fact that I was like wth through the entire movie, I'd say it is the greatest movie I've seen this year. The graphics are extremely well done, and are worth it just by themselves. I'll have to see it at least one more time to give a final verdict though.
Yes, the chorus is back, but with a different melody this time

Saw it. Wasn't blown away - I thought it was 'pretty good' and I thoroughly enjoyed it, EXCEPT for the triple-repeat scene (wth were they thinking? -_-). Same generic questioning as the first movie, at least to me, except it's more on Batou and Togusa's point of view this time.

I'm a huge Shirow fan in general - GitS was always my favorite franchise in general, though I prefer the Appleseed manga (and the Aseed movie looks FAR more impressive than Innocence). So I guess I was kind of disappointed with it - it really didn't have that GitS feel to it, I guess.

It's not really. The philosophy only seems perplex because practically every other scene in the movie was devoted to its discussion. Unfortunately, I still don't get it. At all.

I personally love the chorus song, it adds an exotic atmosphere to the movie that puts it apart from every other futuristic machine-oriented sci-fi movie.
