This calls for heavy weapons. Here is what you should do:

Download AVG Antivirus (Good and Free)
    Download Spybot S&D (Also free)
    Go Windows Process hunting!
    Go registry hunting!

Also, when did you notice this happening? If was just recently, try doing a system restore.

I recently reformatted and made the mistake of hopping online to get updates before I had Norton reinstalled. Hoo boy.

3 days and about 2000 pieces of malware later, I'm still cleaning up after THAT colossal mistake.

The above prescriptions are the way to go. Scan all three, reboot, scan again. Keep doing it till you're clean.

I takes <8 minutes connected to the 'net without protection to get malware on your machine.

A better way of putting it would be "don't download pr0n from websites." There are many far more reliable sources.

What's wrong with Norton? I have Norton Corporate Edition on all of my computers. Then again, it's free for me, because my college provides it (a free download after logging into the site).

Hmm...I read your post again, and it seems that it may be something that is using your internet connection. To find out what's using your connection open a new MSDOS promp and type "netstat -n" without the quotes. There will be a bunch of IP's, som will be from your browser, IM program, etc. Look for anything that looks suspicious.

Here is what the Active Connections box looks like: (no one better hack me <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->)

Unless you look at it frequently, you aren't likely to recognize anything suspicious. So, while it's good to know for future reference, it probably won't help him now, unless you have more tips about what to do with the information.

I use Norton and I've been virus free for um lets see. 1, 2, 3, 4. 4 years. I use Zonealarms free firewall and run Spybot S&D every week. Meh.
