Help me, I'm going to puke!
Ok, I've been talking to people about hip-hop recently, and everyone I've talked to has no clue what it is. They like this new Krunk crap like Lil John and his YEEEEAAAA OOOOOOK WHAAAAAT!!!
It annoys me and sort of makes me sick... I remember when hip-hop was liked because of the lyrics, not because it had a deep bassline and repeated a crappy chorus for the entire the length of the song.
I just want to know if there is anyone here or anywhere for that matter that feels the same way that I do? I dunno, I guess songs should be about somthing meaningfull rather than parties and drugs/alcohol, or at least if that's what they are about that the artist use more than 12 words in the song...
I was just talking to some dumb*** in IRC, so yea, that's why I made this topic...

But i get annoyed when people start raving about something yet they have no clue what they're actually raving about, when you get right down to it. Like people who say they're "hardcore fans" but only actually know about 2 songs of a band. Stuff like that.

A Tribe Called Quest is real hip hop
OutKast is real hip hop
And so on and so forth.

I've always disliked arty-farty poetry in favour of something that's got flow to it ("conventional" poetry, I mean, not hip-hop specifically), and when I occasionally write poems, my own stuff reflects that.
...
Defiance, and old saying comes to mind: "If you can't say anything nice, get the **** out of this thread."

Ok, now I'll be serious and contribute my non-asshatish opinion.
I used to love Hip-Hop. The good-old hip-hop of the 90's. Snoop Dog, Dr.Dre, the classics. Where the lyrics where about the artists coming up through their hard lives and making something of themselves in the world (I've watched a lot of behind the music when a rap artist was the subject, and most of them had horrible childhoods and a hard time "growing up", so to speak)
Even if you're not a fan of the music genre, you have to admit, it takes some kind of talent, whatever it may be, to do what they do. I could learn how to play an instrument if I really put my mind to it, but I don't think I could ever do what they do, at least well. If you've ever tried to seriously freestyle against people (yes, I know this sounds dumb) it can be very, very difficult, to rap things that make sense, with a good flow. Raping takes a lot of time and practice to perfect, not un-like any other skill // profession.
I absoultly hate all the hip-hop pop crap out on the market today. Outkast and that Hey-Ya! song... if I had a dime for every time that was played on the radio, I'd have a lot of ******* dimes. I really don't like how rap // hip-hop has turned into such a violent, angry music genre too over the years. "Artists" like Eminem disgust me with the lyrical talk of killing your own family members and the people you once cared for. And with that said, most rap on the radio I can't tollerate anymore, weather it's about some "Pimp's ho's and his bomb ride" or "how I'm such a playa and I want you back" crap. eww++
Thats why I just don't listen to it anymore, it died for me a long time ago. I guess if I really had to pick one rap // hip-hop group to listen to, it would be old Snoop Dogg.
....
huh?

Mmmmm, booty....
/me runs BobTheJanitor down with his lovetruck.
I'm sorry, but yours is an uninformed opinion and as such doesn't count.
The only thing that gets me off nowadays as far as hip hop goes is someone who seems to have a genuine cause, or someone who impresses me with lyrical creativity or gets a chuckle out of me with humor.
You can hate all you want, but if what you know about eminem extends as far as the crap of his that gets played on mtv, you don't know a damn thing about him.
And if jay-z ranks high up on your list of talented professionals, just don't bother, close the thread.

That's what I'm saying. People hear the **** that's on the radio and judge a good genre before they ever hear any thing good.
Kanye West excited me when he started becoming popular, I thought it may be a sign that hip-hop was going back to being real, I guess I was wrong.
I love how groups/artists can get such as The Dialated Peoples and Talib Kweli can write a song and put meening to it. Then people hear 50 cent, Lil John, and many comercialized rappers and make uneducated judgments that that must be what hip-hop is.
I just don't get why the crap is so popular while the talented artists are left underground with devoted fans, but not the mainstreem attention they deserve.
Anything by Dead Prez is good. Mos Def, from what I know, is good. I like Snoop, NWA, Tu Pac, etc. Older rap/hip hop has this habit of being a lot more meaningful than the newer material.
The last album I bought that was Rap was Mobb Deep's album "Imfamy." It's circa 2001, I think, and it's a really good disc, despite the fact that the whole thing is about "kill ya'll niggaz."
Jadakiss was pretty good, except his new album's a bit on the retarded side in my book.
For real old school awesomeness, Rakim's where it's at. He's the one that changed Hip Hop's sound permanently.
Hip Hop used to be quite honest, but my problem with it isn't the music, it's the culture behind it, which has a tendency to be immature and overcompensating. But that's a subject for another thread.
