<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->I just purchased the kdvrw8x dvd burner and have not been able to  install it. I have connected all the cables correctly, and have it set to master. My computer recognizes that it is there in  the Bios, but windows XP will not see it unless have my CD drive in as well.
When it does see it it cant read anything, as soon as I try and read from it it laggs my computer and I end up having to restart. I have tried a firmware update serveral times, to the w09211sb, it usually doesnt even open up. When i did open it i tried to upgrade and left it there for 20 mins on the "Processing - Please wait - Do not turn off power" and then I checked windows process viewer to find that it was using no CPU for a few mins and i was forced to restart my computer.

I have tried pluging the DVD drive into another windows XP computer and booting it up, but nothing it didnt see it at all. here are my system specs: (taken from SandraSoftware- I dont know what is relevent so here it all is)

If you could email me bakc, that would be alot of help... I dont know what to do, and I really want to get this driver working... <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Since then I have found that my drive does work, but not in windows, my bios sees it, and i can even boot from the drive (with a winXP cd i can go thru the install) but in windows it wont even see it execpt when the above description is true.

If anyone has any suggestions on what to try please post, I have no idea what to do now.
Thanks in advance.

EDIT:
Windows XP is not supposed to need a driver for this this drive, but ive had suggestions of installing the drivers for dos based os's on windows XP, is this wise?

Hmm...I don't know what to tell you except that you have a busted DVD burner. As long as you just recently purchase it, it should still be under the limited 15-day warranty/return policy. Just send it back and get a new one.

Im pretty sure that it isnt busted...

I did a couple of test to try and figure out why it isnt working in the windows enviroment.

    - Booting into safe mode (by holding f8 on start-up) the drive shows up as a in windows CD drive, and accually reads disk. It even read my Matrix reloaded DVD.

-Booting into Safemode with command prompt works, It reads the drive fine.

-Using msconfig, i turned on diagnostic mode, and it did not work.

    To me this means:
    -Drive is still good
-Something that is disabled or turned on by windows in normal mode is causing the conflict
-Something that is not on (or not disabled) in safemode allows it to work

I guess i would have to know alot about what exaccally is loaded in each mode to find what is causing the problem.

    VICTORY!

I got it working in normal windows mode.

This is what I changed, perhaps some one can explain to me why exacally this makes it work:

    In device manager
    -IDE controllers
    -Seconday IDE channel
    -Properties
    -Advanced settings
-Transfermode I changed this to PIO only instead of "DMA if availble"

judging by the wording DMA is better then PIO? what is the diff? is it bad if i leave it on PIO? Can i make it work with DMA?
