Little Story

Had this for a long time, writ it when I was about 12.

I saw a man die when I was seven years old. It wasnt dramatic, with all the sound effects and sad music of the movies. It wasnt heroic, it wasnt meaningful, it was quick, brutal and stupid. Seeing it happen may be the most important part of my life.
I was seven years old and I was out for supper with my Dad and Mom. We were eating at a seafood place. I live in a small town, and back then the area was just a little strip of fishermen's homes, a few wharfs, a bar and a seafood restaurant (Harris' Quick and Tasty). Nowadays its a typical tourist cesspool, nearly 12 giftshops, ridiculous restaurants ("Eat like the locals!") and pay-to-stay beaches. But back then it was very peaceful.
The Quick and Tasty and the bar ("The Grub and Grog") were right next to each other. Me and my family were seated outside, on the porch, eating. It was a Friday night and the bar was pretty rowdy. About halfway through our meal, four men came out and began to trash this car. Smashed all the windows, stabbed the tires and all that. Then they all took off laughing. Soon, another man came out, Claude LeBarre. Claude was a fisherman, and was fittingly drunk. It was his car, but he thought the people who did it were still inside. So, he grabs a friend and gets him to drive him back to his house. we don't think much of it and keep eating.
About 10 minutes later, Claude comes back, but his friend wasn't with him. Claude however, had brought a gun. A shotgun actually, an old bolt action 12. He was walking purposefully toward the bar entrance when the owner came out, Jean Boudreau.
"Oh goddamn you Claude, you put dat der shotgun away, hear?"
Claude never missed a step. He levelled the shotgun at his hip and fired, directly into Jean's neck. The only thing keeping Jean's head on was his spine.
Luckily for everyone else in the bar, Claude was drunk enough to have only loaded an single shell into the shotgun's magazine and was arrested. To my knowledge, he's still in jail.
I remember everything about the shooting perfectly. One thing that stands out was the bolt on the gun. It was so shiny, it looked like mercury, I could see myself in it. It was all I saw, the only thing, filling my brain with that image. That's it.

The story isn't true, but the area is. The Quick and Tasty was real, been torn down for a couple years now. The Grub and Grog is still there, tourists hate the place, which is fine by me.
