I just saw her in concert
So it's Tuesday night, me and my small group from church have dinner and we play a little "ask each other embarassing/personal questions" game. Then I realize, "oh, crap, it's 8:00PM and i'm supposed to pick up 2 people from campus for the Vienna Teng concert at 8:30." Luckily, we don't get sidetracked too much and end up at the pub only 5 minutes late (McGonigel's Muckyduck Pub, if any of you ever go to Houston, look it up). It's a nice place, small bar and lobby area. The stage was really small. Anyway, we sit down and 10 minutes later she comes onstage, tells a few self-deprecating jokes, and gets on to the music.
OH-EM-GEE.
Her music is like 10x better live than it is on her recordings, it's very close and personal. She's also fairly skilled (as in kickass) at piano. Her backup singers/instrumentalists were kinda....bleh, the violinist messed up a lot (but it's something that wouldn't be immediately obvious to people who don't play instruments) and the cello messed up once really noticeably.
But other than that, she's got amazing voice talent. It was a long concert, too, which was bonus++ (2 and a half hours including a 30 minute intermission). I must say I'm much more impressed now than I was when I first heard her songs and was like "yeah, she's got a pretty voice and interesting lyrics."
She also made a reference to a gamer who told her that he thought the lyrics of "The Tower" were about "some girl who used to own but is now getting owned."
That was unbelievably funny, mainly because me and my friends that I went with have a running joke about the whole "roxxor/own/pwn" phenomena.
/me goes off humming "gravity"
P.S. To people who have no idea who Vienna Teng is, here for samples

You lucky lucky man. I want to listen to her too!
[edit]
Just downloaded gravity from her site. Not the singer I was thinking of, but great nonetheless.
And y'know what makes her even more awesome? She has a masters degree in computer science.
Yes it's that awesome. I don't know exactly what genre I'd classify it as. It's piano/vocal. Think Sara Mclaughlin with a clear voice, less production, and more interesting compositions and rhythms.
So while we're onto "not-so-much-popular-but-still-better-than-most-things-in-charts" singers I can only recommend you Jan Hegenberg. He sings mainly german but he has one or 2 english ones (which aren't that good though.) His main field is computer games and his style is pretty much rock. He started his career by singing a CS song. He's very popular in the german gaming scene. His voice ain't that good like vienna's but womens voices are often nicer to listen.

these 2 will mostly interesst you.
The others are even better but in german. Still worth it.

yeah, she seems pretty darn intelligent. and she's fairly witty as well. there was this part of the gamer joke (the guy i talked about before) where she was like, "yeah, i keep getting these backhanded compliments. [insert story about gamer]. and i heard that he said, "yeah, if she were hot, i'd totally be stalking her." this actually makes me glad for two reasons, the first one is that he's not stalking me, and the second is that my music seems to be appealing"
but yeah.
