Ping Spikes Lately

Anyone else having this problem?
I have never had a problem with NS, until now. Lately, my ping has really been unstable. I have cable but my ping keeps jumping from 90 to 300 on every server I join. I joined a server with the lowest ping I could find, but when I join my ping starts to jump up from 90 to 300-400 and back down then up again. Usually my ping is about 80-120. My settings were fine before. I have never needed to change them. My rate, cl_cmdrate, cl_updaterate are all what they are supposed to be for calbe. I don't know whether there has been an update that caused this. It's not spyware or defragmentation on my computer because it has already been removed and done. I do not run any programs in the bg. I have not touched any settings on my computer. Steam has not been giving me any trouble. I do not know what to do now.

Try upgrading your network card drivers. Is there anything else on your network that would slow you down? You said you scanned for spyware, did you scan for viruses too?

80-120ping on cable? mate, thats crap for cable! i'm on cable 1.5mbit (speed isnt an issue on latency btw) and get around 15-40.

    rate 20000 cl_updaterate 80 cl_cmdrate 80

    use those and report back

had a similar prob once where the rate decided to spontaneously change itself, and i was lag spiking terribly, and getting loads of choke.

I think that problem you had before is the same problem I'm having. I've been having all the same sympotms, the ping spikes, the changing rates. During the game, my rate would change to a very low rate byitself and I was not able to change it. I would try changing it, but it goes back to some rate <2000. How did you fix it?

i fixed it by editing the config.cfg and changing it/adding the line in there, then making it a read only file so nothing can change it back

**** knows why it changed itself... still baffs me to this day.. maybe a particular sever i went on that enforces some stupid rates. now i make all my config.cfgs read only and change them from the file itself.
