Heelp
So I've got a DVD drive. I want to play DVDs on my computer. This has caused me no end of trouble; when I put my Star Wars DVD in (the only one I've tried, but the only one I really care about) it autoplays and wants me to install some stupid program that just crashes each time anyways. Windows Media Player and Winamp won't play anything on the DVD, as they either crash or just say "Wrong Format" or something similar. Am I missing a program? A codec? What? I've installed a plugin for Winamp to rememdy the situation (Powerplayer) but that didn't do much. I've also installed the ffdshow codecs which also did diddly squat. What do you guys use to play DVDs? What should I use? Preferably free or cheap.

or you could just rip your DVDs and store them on your copmuter using Auto Gordian Knot
oh, and your DVD player SHOULD have come with a program.
#2 WMP etc CAN play DVDs, but you need a decoder first. These are not, unfortunately, free for windows. Try and get a copy of CyberLink PowerDVD. Its the best one IMHO, and it comes with a decoder that any other program can use.
Of course if you don't want to shell out money, you could watch DVDs on a *nix box, or decode the DVD and compress it with XviD or something, but that would take about a day
And I recommend Media Player Classic (free, google it) for all type of media files.
