I must boot my computer with the xp disc in it! If I don't it says 'insert system disk' and won't boot xp. Can I fix this somehow?

    go in the bios, and make sure its booting from your primary harddrive first.(though it shouldn't matter) i never heard of a problem like this...did you install a new xp update or anything related to XP Os files that would reqiure the disk?

    Try a system recovery.

    Weirdness, has anything unusual happened before this?
    You might have to reïnstall....or someone 1337 enough may tell how to point windows to the RIGHT directory.

    I'm guessing you will have to mess around with the Master Boot Record. How to do that.. I have no idea.
  • g0opyg0opy Join Date: 2003-11-02 Member: 22233Members, Constellation
    I found a file called 'boot' this is waht it says (if could be something here):

    [boot loader]
    timeout=1
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

    <b>partition(2)</b>

    I'm guessing that's what needs to be changed... my guess is to partition(0), but i could be wrong.

    How many partitions do you have?

    Since I don't know names, lemme make some pictars, sec.

    Just right click on My computer, click Manage.

    You should end up with something like this:

    <img src='http://www.imageuploader.net/images/528680partitions.PNG' border='0' alt='user posted image' />

    the thing with the red line around it are your partitions...

    I'm just guessing that your C drive is partition(0), some other partition is partition(1) and your F drive is partition(2).

    And indeed changing this

    [boot loader]
    timeout=1
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

    to

    [boot loader]
    timeout=1
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(<b>1</b>)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(<b>1</b>)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

    Should do the job, just err make a backup before you fiddle with it.

    Since windows counts like this:

    1,2,3 = normal :o)
    0,1,2 = windows

    since your first partition is for files, the second must be for booting/windows.
    which is in windows counting ways, number 1.

    Err, that isn't that weird, there are 3 steps before installing an Operating System like Windows:

    -1e Partitioning ( saying what parts of your HD are going to be used for the booting/OS/Files/etc.

    -2e Formatting ( preparing those parts for files)

    -3e Installing the Operating System (Windows XP/any other OS & drivers/games/files etc etc.

    You have only formatted, so the partions still excist.
    Try booting with the Windows XP cd, and before you format, you see the partions, try deleting ALL the partitions, and create them like this (for example) :

    C: (for windows) 5 GB
    D: (for games/programs/files) 35GB

    Should do the trick.

    I removed all parts on my C disc. So I got only one part for each hdd. I believe its my stupid motherboard that lays on the error..

    That's the point, when you have removed all partitions, there is NO C part <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->.
    Just an empty HD, C:/D:/E:/F:/G: etc stand for the partitions(or driveletters depending what it is, a HD/CDR/DVDR/etc), which are nothing more than a part of the HD space reserved for stuff.

    Remove all the partitions!
