Phil: Hi, how can i help?
Craig Dolan: hi
Craig Dolan: i was wondering if the HalflIfe 2 DvD is the collectors eddition?
Phil: just standard dvd edition
Craig Dolan: but the standard edition of Half Life 2 is shipping on 4 CDs and the Collectors edition is on DvD
Phil: dont believe everything you read in the magazines - the release day edition will be dvd - there are no other retail versions available
Craig Dolan: so there is no collectors edition then?
Phil: there will be no other versions out for the release day
Craig Dolan: ok thanks<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

That was my conversation with gameplay.co.uk just a few minutes ago. So has anyone been able to pre-order the collectors eddition at all or just the regular edition.

Although I do doubt whether 'Phil' knows anyhting about Half Life 2 judging by the pauses.

If this is true, then I forsee either steam or dvd drive sales skyrocketing fairly soon.

Thats my point, I want to pre-order at least 2 weeks in advance to see if the prices coem down a little more, but not if I cant get DoD source and Hl Source on the day Id rather purchase silver.

Ill need to email gameplay.co.uk and see if they can sort it out, and if they cant I guess its Sierra email time.

    EDIT:

Rember how valve said it either be A) Standered edition on 6CDs with CS Source and HL2 or B)1 DvD with HL2, CS Souce, DoD Source, HL Source and poster or something.

    That is BS
    <a href='http://www.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=148079' target='_blank'>http://www.steampowered.com/forums/showthr...threadid=148079</a>
Offical package details from Valve stating that the standard package will be 6 CDs. I find it very unlikely that they would bother making the same game on DVD, so its CD only.

(Edit, perhaps esuna knows better then I do, it seems that valves package list only applies to the US, UK only has DVD)

Doesn't matter anyways, I'm sure most of us here on the forums have broadband connections, and even if you want a hard copy you can just burn the .gcf files. Personally, I've ordered Silver, but HL:S looks very disappointing after reading the PC Gamer HL2 review.

So I can't play HL2 on release day?

I don't want some crappy Steam version, I want some solid CD's I can get my hands on.

    So, uhm, burn the Steam files. You don't trust VALVe? <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I bought HL2 over steam. I have HL2 on CD. And less CDs then the normal boxed version because of the magic of the .7z compression format(<a href='http://www.7-zip.org' target='_blank'>www.7-zip.org</a>)

    I wouldn't panic yet.

Even Amazon.com hasn't got the collectors edition.

Don't forget Gameplay gets its details from the publisher.....

Either that or my pre-order isn't going to be ordered.....

Just for a little bit of info, there is, if i remember correctly, no CD version in the UK. Both CE and standard retail will be released on DVD. The US, however, will have a CD standard retail and DVD CE.

It has been stated many times that the retail edition of HL2 will ONLY BE ON DVD IN THE UK.
Their is no 6cd retail version as is in the US. Other european countries may/may not get the 6cd retail.

The colelctors edition should be out in the UK and most people thought it would be the day of release but as the thread author has stated this seems to not be the case.

Personally im glad the retail edition is only out on dvd in the UK, means less cds for me to swap

I don't know, I like the sound of the Prima book too much.

100 pages of artwork? sounds great.

And what and I missing? DOD:Source. I think thats something I wouldn't play that much anyway.

Oh and I get the T-Shirt!

I've had mine preordered from play for months, just the standard edition. The way I see it, it's probable that things like HL:S and such will be made available separately at some point anyway, or all the ATI Bronze people will be annoyed.

The Prima book that comes with the CE version is only a sampler: it contains <i>some</i> of the Making Of book, and <i>some</i> of the Strategy Guide book.

I've got the full Making Of book ordered on Amazon.

To Tex: The Half-Life Source bit is on one of the sidebars in the HL2 review. I'm talking about PCG US of course.

To Cartman2b^: The only changes in HL:S are to the water effects, shadow effects, the physics (though it doesn't get the full blown HL2 package), and the characters use the Blue Shift models. So, the geometry and everything else is completely the same, which is why I am disappointed; I was expecting a full redo of HL on the Source engine with new textures and higher poly environments. Still, it'll probably be worth playing through one more time. VALVe told PCG that it was inevitable that an independant mod team would make a real HL port, and that several teams had already approached them about it.

Yeah, because missing out on 3/4 of an engrossing <i>Making Of</i> and then turning the page and spoiling parts of the game you may not have played is <b>awesome</b>.
