So, I installed SP2 on this guys machine. It has just been fully formatted, and re-installed with a legal XP CD. I get Norton running, and go to do windows updates. I do a whack of minor ones first, which are fine. Then I do SP2, now the taskbar won't display, no matter how many times I reboot.

I tried shutting down explorer.exe and relaunching it to no avail, and Im kinda stumped, any ideas?

Yeah'...I've heard SP2 is very very bad mojo...You can uninstall it from the Add/Remove programs bit, if you want to.

I'm still yet to install SP2 with all these stories floating around. You could try formatting again and installing SP2 as the very first thing you do to see if it's that in particular causing the problem...

    Oh, and Norton == satan <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I think the remote chance that a hacker will decide to hijack my machine through a hardware and software firewall because I don't have SP2 installed is offset by the fact that I don't have SP2 installed, and therefore my computer actually works.

    WOAH!

So, SP2 is working fine, it was Nvidias useless drivers. Uninstalled em and I can use it again...

What are those 3rd party nvidia drivers called? omega?

Out of interest, which driver version was giving you the problem and what's the graphics card in the machine?

    not sure Comprox, but i'm sure that <a href='http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Third+Party+Nvidia+Drivers&btnG=Google+Search' target='_blank'>Mr. Google</a> knows.

Ok, I got it working using normal nvidia drivers. Seems my other tech had been doing SP2 install and Nvidia driver install at the same time, causing problems, as expected with windows. Just removing and reinstalling the drivers fixed it.

Works great for me. As long as I leave that blasted firewall off. Cause when I turn it on... all hell breaks loose; on the same scale of hell breaking loose in Doom 3.

BT freaks out (whether or not I have the ports open, which I always do).
    IRC freaks out (same ^^).
    Internet browsing becomes 28.8kbps speeds.
    Gaming ping becomes 3 - 4 digits.

At least, that was for the first 2/3 weeks after I installed it. Lately, I have managed to keep sp2 firewall up without as many problems. BT still doesn't like it, regardless of whether I have all the common ports open; 6734, 6881, 6889, 6969, etc.

Course, knowing me, there is undoubtedly something mind bogglingly simple that I probably forgot to do.

But is there any benefit to using it?

I'm sure there's more 3rd party Nvidia drivers than Omega drivers... That being said, Omega drivers are pretty concreate.

The only, single problem I have with Service Pack 2 is that it sucks down around 50 MB more RAM than my system used to. I have 512 MB, so it's no biggy, but just so you know that it's been my experience that Windows consumes far more resources with SP2.

Given that this is a family computer though (the building of my personal god machine begins in around 1 month!) the security wins over the slight lessening of performance.

    You get to be a 1337 H4X02!!!11!11one

Seriously though, more features, more customizable stuff, and generally better support for game specific problems.

Service Pack 2, for Windows. It turns the firewall on, plus adds some stuff to Internet Explorer. I found every single noticeable feature to be annoying.

SP2 rocks. Everything I want bundled into a free update?

    That'll be the MS.

I've installed it since I kept on getting whined at by those concerned about security. Works fine, haven't noticed anything different besides the security icon.
