Dual Monitors And Resolution Problems...

Ok, I have 2 17 inch monitors running at 1280x1024 each.

Games come up on my primary monitor, but unless I run them at the resolution of my desktop (like HL, Quake, etc) then the secondary monitor takes over the leftover horizontal space from the promary one...

Say I have my IRC client running on my secondary monitor (as I usually do) then I get into a game like Doom 3 or Maple Story that doesn't allow resolution changes. It will move the icons from the right hand side of my desktop to somewhee on the secondary monitor and move over any windows that happen to be open 480 pixels...

Anyone know of a way to make the secondary monitor not be affected by the primary?

I have a Radeon 9000 Pro running latest drivers (Cat 4.10 I think), Windows XP Pro SP2 (It did it with SP1 too)

This is really bugging me, I want to read IRC when I have a few free seconds during a game... yea...

You can run Doom 3 on a Radeon 9000 pro?

I don't think it's possible. As far as I understand it resolution is a function of the operating system, and I don't think XP has the most iron clad duelie support.

My dual-monitor experience has been with NVidia's NView drivers, but I find some games simply don't like having the second monitor going. Those that do, however, generally don't mind different resolutions/color depths, so I suppose I can't really help you. My point, mostly, was that some games simply don't like dual monitor scenarios.

9800 pro is a 128 meg card, which means it will run doom three on normal... 64 meg cards can run it on low settings... I'm surprized you can get acceptable framerates in the game with any card < 9600...

I run Doom3 at 1024x768 @ high settings with excellent framerates (near 60) on a 9800. It runs far better than you're giving it credit for

As for dual monitor woes, there's really nothing you can do about it. Both my 9800 at home and nvidia card at work do that. If you're in a full-screen game, you probably won't need to see anything on the other monitor anyway, no matter how you may justify it. The only games I have problems with are RTS games, which often have the cursor fly off into the other monitor, making fun problems when you click But it's easy enough to disable the second monitor for a little while to play a game. You'll probably see a slight performance boost in some of your games, though maybe not as much as you would running dual 1600x1200.

Do you have the 256MB version though? When I try to fun Doom 3 on high on my 9800 pro I get major loading jitters, on normal it runs ok at 1024x768, even with all the frills and a little AA.
