You haven't told us what you're going to be using this computer for, but you have a good CPU and no HDD, so I would assume it isn't really editing anything. Get a better video card..

I can't afford a better GFX card ;(

EDIT: play games, and aslong as it runs HL+mods, hl2 +mods I ain't bothered. the hdd is so small coz I don't use much on this 40GB hdd - I can always upgrade if need be
• eedioteediot Join Date: 2003-02-24 Member: 13903Members
Well in that case, leave the HDD, but get a lesser CPU, and spend that extra money on the vid card if you can. You have to balance it out. No point buying a top of the line engine and then having to strap it to your bicycle. Unless you want to chase after E.T. or something, in which case you'd have to buy wings to stick to it as well. And a basket case.

I could always ask for a loan from mother and father - I'll try that first

PowerColor Radeon 9800 Pro 128Mb DVI Retail Boxed

Only 128 - but would that be better, and do justice?

Good luck, heh. I wish i had a source of income. Maybe I could write a book or build the world's largest tower of paperclips and then charge people to look at it. Damn..

Edit: Yes, radeon 9800 pro 128mb is sufficient. And powercolours have tested to be a lot better than the other radeon 9800's as well, so grab that one definitely The 256mb one would only be used for games like doom3 i believe, and not very much even then, so it's not very useful yet. That card will be sufficient, I have a radeon 9800 pro 128mb now [not a powercolour] and it's great. If I had any wishlists for my computer, it would just be a slightly better CPU and some more ram.

No problem. On a sidenote, I think my dad has that case as well. It's cool. But the led light is quite bright, and you can see a large patch of light on the wall from about 2, 3 feet away... heh.

Lots of top quality components there; but that's reflected in the price. Can you break it down to price per component?

The case is nifty, and probably not varry in price from retailer to retailer.

The hard disc is ample size imo. You have a dVD drive, so any downloads can be burned and stored. A tidy small h/d > A messy 250gig. (I compromise with 2 tidy 80gigs. )

Is this the motherboard?
http://www.overclock.co.uk/customer/produc...&cat=313&page=1
(seems like it.)
SATA support, so why the IDE h/d?
Dual Channel DDR slots; remember to connect one stick in each channel. (Indicated by the different colours.)

Good to see you have the courage to build a PC yourself.

How much Doom 3 do you play? because unless its a friggin lot you're better off with a 9800 @ 128 then a 9600 @ 256

HL and HL mods NEVER use more than 128 megabytes of texture memory, and HL2 you are sacrificing too much FPS and effects for probably a compleatly unnoticable difference in texture quality. ATI cards barely artifact the textures at all anyways.

Hey, everybody plays doom3. They play for 10 minutes, get bored, then quit. But they still play!

If you are getting an Athlon 64, go for the 256 meg card.

ive got a amd64 3400+ and a 9600XT 256, and have yet to see slowdown at all in doom3 except for the hugest and most complicated of rooms

im predicting that by the time game developers take advantage of the 64bit processors, is when they will begin catering towards 256 meg cards
