German Education
Since I'm doing a roleplaying game set in Germany, I was wondering if there's any Germans in here who could do me the favor of giving me a brief overview of the German education system (primary/secondary schools, length, age level, qualifications. Just the basics)
Thanks a lot

Yeah, I DO know that much. But I didn't manage to find any links that actually detailed it (yeah, it's split into three schools around 10 years of age. But what exactly is the difference, how strict are the requirements and is any certain line "required" to move on to other studies later on)

Nope, own system. And since I plan on using the character's educational background as part of character creation, it'd be nice to know how it works
Grundschule (Elementary):

Four years.

Entry age around six and seven.

Basic education, no seperation based on abilities.

Common subjects: German, maths, a mongrel subject consisting of geography and most other basic natural sciences, religious education (protestant, catholic, atheistic, nowadays also sometimes muslim).

Hauptschule:

Up to the ninth grade -> five years.

'Lowest' level of education besides speciallized schools.

Common subjects: German, maths, one foreign language, basic natural sciences, craftsmanship courses.

Realschule:

Up to the tenth/eleventh grade depending on the area -> six to seven years.

Middle ground. Practical education with some theoretic backing, aimed at potential clerks, expert craftsmen, and the likes.

Common subjects: German, maths, at least one foreign language, extended natural sciences, depending on your orientation craftsmanship, economic, or similiarily specialized courses.

The Realschule's exam can be upgraded to an Abitur (see below) after two more years of learning.

Some regions, such as Saxony, combine Haupt - and Realschule.
Gymnasium:

Up to the twelth/thirteenth grade depending on area -> eight to nine years.

Higher education ending with the Abitur, which entitles you to study at universities.

Common subjects: German, maths, two to three foreign languages, all 'classic' natural sciences, some social and humanistic sciences. Individual specialication after the tenth / eleventh grade, often in the shape of a course system.

Nowadays, 50% of Germany's pupils learn on the Gymnasium; an inflation of the Abitur's worth has taken place.

Beyond that, there's a multitude of higher educations, from the 'Lehre', becoming a fellow to a craftsman (such as an electrician), to the universities. I myself am studying at a technical university right now.
