Half Life 2 Movies
So, I've been thinking about the Source technology, and its ability to realisticlly render emotions, and such. Then, I thought about its ability to make characters lip-sync, and the tools it includes to create a multitude of environments combined with powerful triggering.
Now, I know that The Sims 2 has the capability to let you make films (or so I'm told), but I was thinking that Source could do it even better.
Do you think it will be possible to make full-length movies with Source? If so, what movie would you make with it?
We could begin to see a lot of amatuer writing come to life with Source. I assume producing a film is easy if you don't have to build sets, props, or hire actors. Get yourself a mapper, and some voice talent, and your set to go...

That means you can easily load it into editing software to add sounds, get the correct sequencing, etc.
I think it would be great if a group worked on a mod specifically to allow quick direction.
the lipsyncing information is certainly pre-calulated, but I don't know how dynamic the facial gesture system is. If you could set up a few marks, add a menu system to indicate what to do when you hit that mark, dynamically set targets. Not to mention tell the AI where to look (focus the eyes etc.).
What would be needed to make a mod like that really work?

That's assuming these machinations can lipsynch better than Ashlee Simpson.
Okay sorry, on to my real point.
This will make for beautiful in game cutscenes, for any single player mod that tries to have them. However, a full length movie, now that is something I would LOVE to see. I mean, it would be freaking brilliant to see that kind of innovation.
Hero is right, amazing things will take place in this field, I have faith in it.
Directly recording to avi is a great plus, less work required in a video editing proggy.
That post just seems really ominous to me, in kind of a mad scientist way. I'm scared now.
Building sets = mapping
Props = modelling
Actors = other players
It still requires quite a few people and quite a bit of talent to pull off.
Sure, machanima (or whatever it's called) is far more accessable to the public, but it still requires a lot of work to pull off well. However, i too will be looking forward to any new machanima work which should, with enough work put into it, be a lot more polished than anything we've seen before.

unless i am mistaken, that phrase is uttered in DOOM3 before the "incident"
There's been a full-length movie made with Counter-Strike.
EDIT: (By full length, I mean approximately 40 minutes)
That's right, Counter-Strike.
Not even Condition Zero, just Counter-Strike.
EDIT: Even UT2k4 can do this, if you've seen the UT2003 intro video (which people that own UT2k4 DO have access to, go Community -> Movies), you'd know what I mean.
I'd like to see RvB redone in this, just rip the voices and put it in some kind of scene <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Machanima has been going for a looooooooong time. First time i can recall it cropping up was Quake 1, but there's a definite chance that it was around before that. That was, however, before it adopted the name Machanima.

Yeah. Our local alternative rock radio station plays that clip alot too. When I first heard it, I was like "OMG THAT'S DOOM3 IM SUCH A NERD"
I like how that is one single thought rather than two thoughts one after the other. I just works even better that way.
(As opposed to "OMG that's doom3" "OLO I am such a nerd.")
I'm such a nerd.
I <3 H-Town. I was born there after all.
Course I only love H-Town in its PRE-POLLUTION state. Now I wouldn't got there for fear of shortening my lifespan.

Oh man, it sucks here. Where'd you live in houston?

I was about 6 months old when I left, so I dunno the exact place. However my family has visited a family friend (whom we call Aunt, despite ethnic inexplicability, because we are that close) who lives in the area numerous times, so I like going back there. But our most recent trips were not good times. For the previously stated reasons. Big D may always have that over H-Town.
I've only tried to make one movie in CS:S, and it output a bunch of tgas and a wav file. It does it real-time, and only managed to get about 10 fps when I did it. I don't know all the specifics, but I hope/think there should be a way to get smooth 30fps videos from a demo.

If you manage anything relatively significant and are able to convert it into a single avi, please post it or pm it to me. That would be really cool to see.

Oh god, it's so beautiful.
Okay. Record a demo:
record <demoname>
Then stop:
stop
Set host_framerate to the framerate you want to capture your video at:
host_framerate 30
Start playing the demo, then type:
startmovie <moviename>
to start capturing. This will slow down and put 30 tgas per second in your Steam\SteamApps\counter-strike source\cstrike\ directory. It will also output a .wav file to that directory. The absolutely beautiful part is that the wav file will play at normal speed and automatically sync up to the video. Also, since it will slow down to get every frame, you can make videos with a huge resolution if you want. Now type
endmovie
to stop. You can use a video editing program such as <a href='http://virtualdubmod.sourceforge.net/' target='_blank'>Virtualdubmod</a> to string up the tgas into a video and add in the .wav file.
It's by far the best demo/video making system I have seen in any game.
for startmovie
just do this
startmovie <filename> <frame_rate>
for startmovie
just do this
startmovie <filename> <frame_rate> <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
No. That's the command for Half-Life 1. In CS:S if you try that it will give you the message "startmovie <filename>" and not start a video.

Except that Strangerhood, based on what i've seen so far, looks great. BATHROOM!
