    Why do you think you needed a calculator?

    541 and 201

    5/3 = 1r2
    24/3=8r0
    1/3=0.333...

    = 180.333...

    20/3 = 6r2
    21/3 = 7r0

    = 67

    it's headcalculable.

    Google is also great at unit conversions.

    But google's best thing is infact it's simplicity. It's nice to have a <1 second load time without all the BS graphics and links and spam. (hence why www.google.com is my homepage on my browser) Compare google with yahoo for instance.

    come to think of it why did you need this calculated anyways?

    Reminds me of the time I was stuck in class taking a math test so I went on IRC and asked a bunch of people for help >_<

    It is just a little way of writing the numbers that lets you remember them easier. The process is exactly the same as long division and lets you divide numbers based upon how well you know your low end multiplication tables.

    You can also try another method. (showing my age)

    Lets say you have a table of logarithms. Then you can try this mathmatical trick.

    What is 53/17 ?
    Use a property of logs.
    53/17 = x
    ln(53/17) = ln(53)-ln(17) = ln(x)
    Therefore 53/17 = ln(53) - ln(17) = ln(x)
    ln-1(x) to get your answer.

    It reduces a pretty ugly division problem into a simple subtraction problem and a log table lookup.

    Thats how you did math back in the day before calculators.

    <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->demonstration:

    53/17 = 3.117647...(and so on forever)

    ln(53) = 3.970
    ln(17) = 2.833

    3.970 - 2.833 = 1.137

    1.137 = ln(3.117647...)

    <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    edit: fixed a few mistakes.

    It's a bit of a confusing method. It was just a demonstration of how to do some math problems quickly without the use of a calculator.

    Reduction of a complex and lenghty multiplication problem into a table lookup and addition problem.
