Something i'm working on

nrbynrby Join Date: 2002-03-05 Member: 270Members
I've been working on this for a couple of days, just tinkering with lighting and layouts right now.
The location is a mars based military defense installation, maybe radar/meteor tracking tbd.
The marines enter via dropships. (last shot)
I was thinking of ns_valleyforge or ns_sentinal as a name - what do you think?

Anyhoo, here are some shots.

Hmmm... let me just say... <b>awesome!</b>. Man, you really made a believer out of me with those screens. Fantastic architecture and detail work, N@rby. And that dropship is the bizomb. I cannot wait to play this.

Wow, I really like the dropship, not to mentions the SAMs. <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->

/me points to the transparency of the in-WC shot. Or, ah... in-GC shot? perhaps? Unless those purple boxes are actually purple brushes. <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->

I think sentinel sounds like a great name, given the SAMs and all. Looks very nice.

That's a drop ship? I thought it was some kind of mobile command center. If it is a dropship, are you going to make it similar to the starship troopers design?

btw, your lighting, architecture, and texture choices are amazing.

thanks for the comments guys, very encouraging. The drop ship has 4 engines in each corner (the rear 2 you cant see) it detaches from a vessel in orbit, then freefalls and the engines slow it down. It can then manouveur using those engines.

When you spawn in the dropship do you get any hint that it's moving, like a window showing out or summin' or do you just wait a while while the dropship is pretending to land and then teh doors open???

    Just curious. <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

KFS: that must be an in WC shot because you can see the camera label in the top left.

/me comes after n@rby for his upgraded WC

Nice shots by the way, although unless there laser sams, change the texture <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

Which is why I made reference to GC... I think that's the name... Ah well. The perks of being contracted, I'd assume.

I forgot to add, the drop ship is already landed and open, but i'll take the flying down idea, maybe try and implement it. Thanks for the feedback <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

Man I have to say, that's some wonderful architecture, and the overall style works very well. I would have to agree that you should alter the backstory though <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

I really enjoy the archetecture and texture work, but the lighting outside seams a little unconvincing, maybe some more shadows or something? just an idea, great work

Welcome, N@rbster!  Your levels look great, as usual.  My main comments:

    - I think you could use a bit more contrast in some of those shots (I realize that some of these are WC shots without lighting though).  I'd love to see some more spotlights, and make sure you're using the env_gamma for maximum effect

    - I admit I get a little uneasy when I see outdoor shots like you're showing.  They look great, but we're really focusing on indoor environments.  I think you can make it work with care, just keep this in mind.

I think we can now say that NS has "arrived". <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

Thanks, appreciate the feedback. You're right, these outdoor shots are not the focus of the map. One is a spawn, the other is a link between areas to give a little verticality to the game (for jumppacks and climbers). They just contrast the huge amount of indoor stuff that will eventually be in the map, i see your point however.

The pink cubes in the wc shot are light_spots, i think they give a really atmospheric appearance to maps and i intend to use a lot of them to get a good effect.

Thanks for all the comments guys, i appreciate it.

That makes me wonder, what is wrong with outdoor style map, speacially like a moonbase or mars base, where it could be like a system of depots with an underground tunnel system and a over top type land place??  It could be really cool, I do realize that bob wouldnt be at home here, but a level 5 could plow in the open.  just wondering?

one thing that would be cool fore some maps , maybe all , is: when the dropship "drops" ;P the mariens that have joined sit in the dropship , with a little view of the outside of the map , in this map it would be the SAMs , also there could be a .wav playing the mision breifing in short ...  would be cool , but it isn't a necessity

Trane, the main reason NS would like indoor levels (for now at least) is to explain how the commander console works. If you could come up with some logical explanation on how a command console could hover over open areas, please explain. The current console works through a places security network, and you wouldnt have the equipment needed to cover the whole outside of a base or such. Some outdoor areas are allowed though, so dont be scared by them!

    Nah, man, Satilite Uplink!
  • TalionTalion Join Date: 2002-01-24 Member: 28Members
You mean an explanation like the commander view being a graphical representation of the information being recieved from various sources including cameras, motion sensors, satilites, etc?

There are always semi-believeable explanations in sifi. I thought the problem was more one of game balance?

Game balance does include in there too alot, but Trane had already pointed that out, and I was just adding another reason that I had heard.

And Jedisar, that was mentioned before, the mapper just has to make sure they include some obvious visual that their command console it satelitte linked.
