All you need is an image editing program and a WAD editing program.

But first, ask yourself this question: do you really want to make your own textures? It's not easy. Plus, the .wad files that you can find in your NS folder contain some VERY high quality textures by some very talented artists.

Anyway, if you want to handle the .WAD files yourself, I recommend a program called Wally. There are some good tutorials on the site, but the download links are ancient and all broken. The best place to download it from is here, on this page on the VERC collective (scroll down to "Textures").

Wally also works as an image editor, but not a great one. As for a better image editor, try Paint Shop Pro (my pick), Photoshop, Paint, the Gimp, whatever. The tutorials on the Wally site should cover how to turn regular image files and put them into .WAD packages.

In wally, you save the textures into a wad file. So yes you could have 200 textures all in the same wad, or if you wanted you could have 200 wads with one texture in each (i wouldn't recommend the second).

When you save to a wad file, it adds it as a seperate image in the file (think of it as a zip file for textures).

Usually I make my walls between 128-196 for a corridor and 160-256+ for rooms depending on how big I want them. Generally though make the textures either 128 or 256 square for ease of use, unless its for a specific object.
