Tried The "explicit Instructions" Thing....

Still doesn't quite work.
Ok, I've tried going through the instructions in the Sticky, still having problems. I have Natural Selection (beta 5) in the popup box in Steam, under "3rd Party" category. However, when I click on it, it takes me to the screen where you can buy HL 2 and such (the "Brosw Games" section I believe). I've tried everything I can think of, and still can't get it to work. I have uninstalled and reinstalled 3 times without success. I start by installing HL, then patching it, then installing steam, updating it, then installing NS. Now my HL directory is in a different place than my Steam directory, but thats where they wanted to go by default. Also, I've noticed it goes d:/program files/steam/steamapps/<USERNAME>/half-life/ns,
doesn't mention my email addy anywhere. I've tried changing the username to my email address, but then NS disappears from the 3rd party category in Steam.

I'm stuck. I have played NS a few months ago, and LOVED it, but now (after reformatting), I can't seem to make it work again.

I should also mention that I do NOT have the option to play HL over steam either. Only things in the "My Games" section is "Codename Gordon, Source Dedicated Server, and Dedicated Server".

What am I doing wrong?

Did you run through the HL hazard course before you tried to install NS? You have to be able to play it, as NS needs some of the HL files.

This will install beta 5 no matter what you have done before, so start at the begining!
1) Install Steam (Get the one with the HL cash if you can), if you have already installed Steam you may skip this step
2) Play HL Via Steam (just load up the training mission and then quit)
3) Search Your Hard Drive for NS and NSP
4) Deleate ALL Folders with these names.
4a) If you have a previously working install of an earlier version that you wish to keep: You can rename all NS folders to NSBUP and leave the NSP Folders alone.
4b) If you have a previous install of NS, and wish to keep your configs, cimply copy your .cfg filles (normaly just config.cfg and userconfig.cfg, to your desktop)
5) Close Steam.
6) Run the Beta 5 installer (ns_install_v3_b5.exe)
6a) Point the installer at Steam\SteamApps\Your@email\Half-Life
6b) If you backedup your config files, now is the time to move them to your NS folder.
7) Launch Steam
8) Change your filters so that the point at Natural Selection(Beta 5) Instead of Natural Selection (Beta)
9) Connect and play.
10) If you get any errors (map.bsp, client.dll, or ANYTHING:
a) Search your HDD for NS, there should only be a dir called NS in your Steam\SteamApps\Your@email\Half-Life\NS, unless you backed up a previous install.
b) If it is ANYWHERE elese, try moving it to the correct place, or simply deleate it and start again.

If you still get map.bsp errors, or client.dllrors, start from step 3 again.
If you are POSITIVE that you hvae folowed the directions correctly, then redownload ns_install_v3_b5.exe from another location.

Sounds to me like you need go get a CD key into Steam so it thinks you have permission to actually play HL.

Right click on steam icon, select play games, down at the bottom, hit the browse games, then down at the bottom of the next window, use the "register a product I already own" button and put in the CD key off your HL cd.

Then you should be able to play HL and then, once you can play HL you should have better luck playing NS.

Tried running through some of the hazard course first. Didn't help any.

Like I said, I tried going through the steps *3* times. Isn't working for me.

And I thought about the CD key thing too. I tried hitting the "Register A Product You Already Own" button, entered the CD Key, and it said it's already been registered to an existing Steam account. Now remember, it DID work before when I had it all up and running a few months ago, so Steam should still have my CD key validated (maybe thats why its saying its already in use?).

Any other thoughts?

If you don't have HL in the menu, you can't play NS. How did you even run through the hazard course if you don't have HL under My Games? You have to get HL installed, then put NS in your
Drive:/.../Steam/steamApps/email/half-life
folder

If Steam says your HL cdkey is already registered to another account, then are you sure you are logging in to the same account you used before you reformatted? If you are, and it doesn't show up, there is something you can do. Uninstall Steam. Install HL off of your HL CD. Run HL once and type in your cdkey. Now install Steam. Steam should autodetect your HL installation and give it to you under 'My Games'. Then follow the explicit instructions and it should work.

I have HL installed off the CD, so that's how I played it. I never played HL through steam since it's not listed as well.

I've uninstalled everything again, and I'm going to try installing the steam with HL cache instead of just Steam itself. Maybe that will correct whatever the problem is...

Ok....tried reinstalling for the 4th time (god, I'm going to have to defrag after all this crap, lol) using the steam app that has the HL cache along with it.

Still not working.

Seems I'm having trouble right off the bat with step #2 of the process "Start up HL via Steam and play through a few minutes of training". HL is not an option to play on the dropdown box. Only options are the dedicated server, dedicated source server, and Codename Gordon under "My Games". After installing NS, I *DO* see it in the "3rd Party Games" section, but still just pops up the "Browse Games" window when I click on it. Right clicking only gives me "purchase" (which takes me to Browse Games), and Update, which takes me to the update list of HL patches.

After installing HL from the CD and updating that, I can play normal HL just fine, but it STILL doesn't show up in Steam, or allow me to play NS. I'm 100% certain that this is the account I had before, as I believe no two Steam accounts can have the same email address, correct? I've only used 1 email addy for the past 2 years, and when I asked to retreive my password, it sent me the email. I still don't have a folder with my email address as the name, so I know somethings wrong somewhere. I'm utterly dumbfounded however. I have quite literally wasted the WHOLE day trying to get this stupid app to work (Steam, not NS ).

Well, for one thing you're posting on the NS forums about a steam issue. You really should be posting on the steam forums about this issue, because the core issue is getting HL to work in steam.

Playing the hazard course thru via what you call 'normal HL' and not steam isn't helping you any. You need to be playing the hazard course via steam HL because that's what the issue here is. NS requires steamed HL.

As I see this, you still don't have steam seeing a valid CD key. Once this happens you should be good to go but you are reporting that steam is barfing when you put in the CD key. This is the root of your issue and something that you need to work out with valve and steam before attempting to play other mods like NS. Once HL shows up as playable via steam then you will be able to play NS, but not till then.

^Thats what I was beginning to think.

Oh well, guess I'll go find somewhere to bug people about my Steam issue.

Any suggestions?
