Odd Lockup/crash Situation

On my machine, I've notced that a certain key combination always causes my system to lock up. I'm not sure if this is a bug or something just on my system (driver error maybe?) and I'd like to test it before posting in the bug report forum.

If you would like to test this, create a server on your own machine. Then, activate your voicecomm and hold down whatever key you have bound to +walk. While holding those keys down, hit escape - this causes my laptop to lock up, and I wonder if it does the same to anyone else's machine.

Are both your keyboard and mouse using the same USB bus? I had to move my kb and usb mouse to seperate ports. My motherboard had a dual BUS for a total of 4 ports, but I only had one USB header in use at the time, which was the onboard one. You may have to dig into the mobo box and get out the extra USB header and install it, or just look for the 2nd set of usb ports and move the kb away from the mouse. Also, if you have a USB headset that could be adding to the issue. Try moving them around till you get it to work and not crash.

EDIT: Just re-read your post and noticed you're using a laptop, so the mobo expansion option is out. Still you could be running into USB issues if you are using a USB mouse and USB headset. Most LTs these days only have two usb ports, but if you are using a hub to get all the devices connected try removing that.

My laptop has four USB ports total. I use one for an MX510 mouse, one for an external sound card, one for a keyboard and I draw power from the last one for a laptop cooler (it doesn't send any data, just power.) I have a Ps2/USB adapter dongle, I'll try running my mouse on that and see if it helps.

Do you guys have a 9600 series ATI card?

If so this post may interest you:

I've noticed that changing to D3D mode prevents the problems quoted in that post.

Not sure if this would apply to the original post... but the guy above sounds like he has the same issues.

Given that all three of your major input devices are using the USB bus that could well cause this problem. The external soundcard can eat quite a bit of USB bandwith. I'd try using the PS2 adapter and the built in LT keyboard to see if that clears this up. At that point the USB bus will be dedicated to the sound card. After this works for a few hours/days without lockups add in the external KB and then work your way up to the USB mouse. Somewhere along the way you should get a clear indication as to which device or combination of devices is maxing your USB bus out.
