People worrying about wasting their money shouldn't panic. I opted for the three month subscription at $22.50, and have just traded my remaining in-game funds (admittedly, I hadn't spent much) in at the GOM for $22.86. Not only that, but by downgrading my account I'm still able to access the game for free (I'll just receive much less funds and have no in-game land).
To summarise, I've made money and can return to the game as often as I like!
Aneways, the game where some guy bought the island was Project Entropia, yet another MMO void of monthly fees.
This one works slight bit differently from Second Life tho. Here you transfer real-life cash into PED's(Project Entropia dollars), and use them to buy all kinda stuff.
More action, less socialisation, but it's still kinda cool.

Had a SL account for a while now. I never could really get into it, as the avatar alteration tools are all primitive-based, rather than allowing you to create a proper meshwork in an actual 3D modelling program. Which is irritating, as far more intricately detailed avatars and constructs could be brought into the world, at a much lower bandwidth cost than the prim-architecture. A decent body could weigh in at around 22-60KB... barely a sneeze for broadbanders, which is required to play, after all.
As for Project Entropia, I wrangled two friends into it.. they've invested a good chunk of cash at this point ($30 and $75) and the latter has already started making money back on mining, hitting a Hall of Fame vein every other day or so. He pulls back about $300/mo from the game to his account, leaving a little more in than he had at the start of the month to pay for repairs to his mining gear, and additional seismic bombs. The former is at least breaking even, on a consistent basis.
Second Life has set the precedent, and from this point onwards I shall no longer tolerate games that omit purchasable Metal Slugs and drinks by Danger Mouse.
