I recently received an email from someone.

This of course isnt the first time that this has ever happened but Ive always wondered why and how it happens.

The definition

daemon Last modified: Tuesday, April 22, 2003

Pronounced DEE-mun or DAY-mun. A process that runs in the background and performs a specified operation at predefined times or in response to certain events. The term daemon is a UNIX term, though many other operating systems provide support for daemons, though they're sometimes called other names. Windows, for example, refers to daemons as System Agents and services.
Typical daemon processes include print spoolers, e-mail handlers, and other programs that perform administrative tasks for the operating system. The term comes from Greek mythology, where daemons were guardian spirits.

I replyed back only to get the evil Yhaoo! mailer DAEMON message

I'm guessing what that error means is the recipients mail server rejected the incoming email because of an invalid address, it didn't know where to deliver it.

...I don't understand. Did someone randomly send you an email about daemons, or something?

Sounds like either a spammer or a virus has used your address for the from: field and sent out to a old or random address.
The MAILER-DAEMON is just the mail server.

    There is no daemon...

It's just the horrific bedfellows of the Chaos Gods. Turn away now and let the pure light of the Emperor cleanse your unworthy soul.

Basically, if I understand correctly, what happened is when you attmped to relpy to that IP, (Which I don't think can be set up as an email could be wrong though) it said no such IP address and therefore sent that error back to you. It would be nice if I knew more about the inner workings of the intarweb :-)
