Getting Annoyed Now

Trojan/virus/spyware w/e it is
Every time I play a game in Steam, when the game starts up (or when the map changes), i get an IE pop up. I get them when i start the computer up, and i get an iexplorer.exe error come up on screen for 2 seconds as i shut the computer down.

I use firefox (and i didn't switch to firefox because of this, this problem appeared much later).

AVG, Spybot, Adaware, Sygate firewall thingy-ma-bob and CWShredder don't pick up anything (although spybot will sometimes pick up a CWS file, and remove it, but it doesn't change anything). Don't know if it's related to this or if it's an error in the MS (maplestory) patch that i just downloaded, but it'll run for about 10-20 seconds before crashing out with an IExplorer.exe error.

I'd really rather not format, and there's bound to be some easy fix out there that i just haven't found. So help! Please.

Stickman, if you could supply us with a bit more specific on the versions of Ad-aware that would be appreciated, I have noticed that some people haven't switched over to the SE version yet, and that does pick up on a lot of the extra pop-ups/toolbars that some of those malware/trojans like to use. (Phew, long sentence.)

Have a look through the list of running processes and any that sound suspicious, do a search of your hard drive for the name or do a Google search.

I had to do that a while ago with a laptop crawling with spyware. No spyware removal program would detect them so I had to manually go through the process list, kill them, delete the files on the hard drive, go through the registry and clean out the startup.

Here's 2 websites that lists common running processes and what they are:

    http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm

    http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintas...processlibrary/

Take a look at all your running programs and compare it to these lists (bookmark them). I do this every 3 weeks to make sure i dont have anything harmful running.

track the virus at it's source. If it give you an exact location, the folder is probably hidden so like when you get that warning again, write it down, track it and the delete it. if you cant acces it, go one folder down like, ex: R199\GHGJ when its like this delete the path in front of it like this ex:R199\ Hope this helps!

    hahaha spyware xD

    Google for:

    Spybot S&D

    Ad-Aware SE

    Spywareblaster

    Hijackthis

Oh and if you don't have a clue what a certain process does, type its name in Google, and a bunch of sites with process info will show up explaining its functions/behavior/priority,

and all your lil problems will be solved m8

There is spyware that these programs don't pick up, as I can attest to. Sometimes the only way is the manual way, which is a pain.

Nah... if you update SpyBot Search and Destroy (and RE-DOWNLOAD the NEWEST version) you should get rid of 99% of anything on your PC... the rest should be held in captivity till a way to remove it is found... CWS shredder is a good one to

Also, try looking for online-based virus scans (Trend's House Call is a good one) as they will find a LOT more than a PC run one (as PC's can be tricked by viruses into NOT scanning certain folders...)
