Internet connection is part of the minimum spec. Its an anti piracy measure, the fact that its single player isnt really a factor.
Think about it though, the cost of getting a dial up modem, phone line and ISP (100s of completely free dial up services) isnt much compared to the cost of a computer which can run HL2. Also, Steam has an offline mode so once the game is unlocked you no longer need an internet connection (until you reinstall). <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd--> The problem with this is, what happens down the track when the company goes bust or whatever and people still want to play HL2?
How can they auth to a non-existant service?
Steam is good and all, but I miss the days of actually downloading and archiving the patches for my own personal use. (For example, me and my friends occasionaly still bust out old alpha versions of DoD for LAN parties)

A patch? Free download of the entire game? (like GTA1 now is) Open sourcing? All of these are things could happen in 10 years time, but i doubt Valve have considered that far ahead.
Its only a $50 game for crying out loud, stop worrying what will happen in years to come.
AAARGH I'll go mad if theres no HL2 next tuesday in the german shops!!!
Edit: Whats making me even more mad is that there is no other method of paying than by credit card. Only about 10-15 % in europe got such a card. The rest uses visa, EC and such. Hope valve will do something about it.

So... anyone still have a reason to buy HL2 in a box rather than over Steam? Because the battle is over, and we won.

This is nonsensical, unless these hundred thousand pre-orders arrived in the space of like a week. If all these people have <i>pre</i> ordered the game, then don't they know that they need to run off as many copies as that? What, they told the manufacturers how many they needed, then checked the number of people who'd preordered and went "oops we need moar! OLOL!"?

Isnt that what they are doing now? Running off more copies...
I thought they're selling a single-player edition that doesn't need internet activation, but it also doesn't have multiplayer capabilities? Box for me. I like boxes. And cubes. And other easy to understand geometrical shapes.
