Hey Guys, Check Out These Tracers

<div class="IPBDescription">this is a neato trick++</div> So I remembered lately that NS lets you tweak your tracers, those yellowish lines that shoot out of your gun. It's pretty easy to customize some really cool stuff using these console commands:
traceralpha 1-0
tracerlength 1-0
tracerspeed 2500
tracerred 0-1
tracerblue 0-1
tracergreen 0-1
Setting the traceralpha to 1 makes them brightest. A speed around 2500 is what we need for this effect. Also, we need to set the tracer length to a fraction of its usual length, so put that at around 0.07. Now, pick a color you want your marines' bullets to be, and use the tracer colors from between 0.01 to 0.99 to create your bullet color.
Then, you get stuff like this:
traceralpha 1-0
tracerlength 1-0
tracerspeed 2500
tracerred 0-1
tracerblue 0-1
tracergreen 0-1

Pretty cool eh? Looks almost Star Warsy! Green blaster bolts and stuff flyin' around. They look great as purple beams too. You can adjust the beam length also. Just fool around with this, because everyone needs their own custom homemade tracers.
This would be great for custom models too, if you have an LMG or HMG that looks like a laser gun.
Or custom sounds.
tracerred "1"
r_shadows "1"
tracergreen "1"
tracerblue "0"
traceralpha "150"
tracerlength "4"
traceroffset "-90"
tracerspeed "3000"
gl_max_size "512"
Geez...helps locate marines...I smell a block on the trace commands now... <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Actually, if there way a way to do it per team, then mvm would be easier....uhg...cant believe i said that...
add it to userconfig.cfg
NINJA EDIT:
can someone post the original tracercolours?

i highly doubt they would ever block this cause having surround sound makes it just as easy, if not quicker to find the marine that is shooting you
So, you know console is that ~ button, and where to find your config and userconfig.cfgs right? I entered mine in my userconfig using notepad. But you can get the same effects using the console, I just don't think they save. Just remember to set the tracers really bright (traceralpha 1), pick a good bright color like red (tracerred 0.99, tracerblue 0.05, tracergreen 0.05), and set the tracers to a very short length, since this number is measured as a fraction of the distance the tracer goes to the target (tracerlength 0.05 +/- 0.45), I think.
I wish I had OFFICIAL word on these commands' actual range of settings.
Anyway thats how I did the above pictures. :D
Another one to remember is traceroffset, but I don't even know what this does.
Setting tracerspeed really low (mid 500's) gets weird effects, as the bullets SLLLLLOOOOOWWWW down. Also, above 3000, and you can barely see tiny tracers. I'm also not sure how high tracerlength goes. If you put it at it's maximum setting...and then made the tracers suuuuper slow... it would be like contrails. If you made them white. Maybe?
See, go test this ppl, we all need to figure out how to maximize its use.
tracerlength 200~

Nice! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
When you have two or more HMGs firing at once, it looks like DoD or something.
I find that a tracerspeed of around 700-950 is just fast enough to look like a bullet, but slow enough to really see fly through the air. Adjusting tracerlength will determine how long your tracers are, obviously.
I told some people to come look at the forums for help, basically the easiest way to do this is join a combat map with a lot of marines with HMGs and LMGs, and go AFK in the marine start or something while you open console, make the changes, and see what effects it has. Mess around with the tracer settings in console until you get something you like, then write down those numbers and put them in your Userconfig to make them final. You can later go back and mess with the numbers again, or open console and mess with them in real time.
I just like green because it looks "TSA" style, I guess.
These tracers are:
tracerred "0.0"
tracergreen "1"
tracerblue "0.0"
traceralpha "1"
tracerlength "0.08"
traceroffset "-124"
tracerspeed "1500"
YOU GET MORE OF THEM WHEN YOUR WEAPON LEVELS GO UP.
So in combat or NS to test this, get weapons1 right away, weapons3 gives you lots of tracers.
okay, lets say two marines are playing, Swift, and, uhh, me, yeah...
Swift has pretty green tracers and i have the normal ugly Tracers, do i see Swift's Tracers as Green? or do i see his as Normal?, does he see mine as normal? or does he see mine as Green?
Is there some setting you must have enabled/disabled to get it to work? I've already changed to a more laser-ish model and I'd like a straight tracer that move instantly to the target (i.e. long and fast).
Also, the alpha command seems to change the color. For example, in DoD (I just played around with it a bit just now), the default is 0.45, and I get an organge sort of tracer. If I increase it to 0.99, I get a green one.
you shouldn't use that unless your graphics card has 128mb+ of memory.

OH YEAH, A COUPLE MORE DETAILS:
We already know that more weapon levels = more tracers, and 0 weapon levels = 0 tracers. But the shotgun does not shoot tracers no matter how high the weapon level. Also, people with different weapon levels will shoot different numbers of tracers. A marine that has a lvl1 LMG which is only shooting a few green bullets at you is less dangerous than the lvl3 HMG which is shooting more green bullets than an arcade space shooter game.
I'm still trying to find the range these numbers go from. Most of them range from 0 to 1, so to get a midrange, you use 0.5 or whatever. I know this is true for the colors. Also, traceralpha is misleading, since it can be set higher than 1, but setting it at 1 seems to make it the most bright. For tracer length and tracer speed, these numbers effect each other, I believe. Setting a tracer length of 0.075 (for plasma bullets) with a speed of 1500 will be different from settings of length 300 speed 950.
:/ I'm not sure if I'm qualified to help anyone. My best advise is make sure you read everything and don't give up and keep messing with the numbers.
After I finish figuring out how to change tracer colors on the fly, I'm going to write a script that randomizes or cycles the color, length, and speed, so that I can have a gun that shoots rainbows.

I don't rmember exactly (I just went out and got HL2:CE!!) but IIRC I had speed at 5, green at 1, blue at .8 and red at zero. Alpha was at 150.
I just shot in one direction with my HMG and ran into the path of the tracers. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
