I'm going to buy it retail then upgrade to silver via Steam (I think that's possible).
I must say, they really screwed this up. They could've at least made the regular retail = bronze and the special edition = silver and make gold a steam-only offer. Instead they have to mix everything up so you have to use steam if you want all the game-related stuff (excluding clothes and hintbooks and whatever stuff like that gold includes).

the only time I saw mention of upgrading was for those with the HL2 voucher (gets them bronze for free, and they can upgrade)

So... if i want: --------------------------- HL2 Day Of Defeat: Source Counter-Strike: Source --------------------------- (and ofcourse the abillity to download mods to HL2)
Bloody hell... Okay, I really have to check this out. This is the most screwed-up distribution of a game I've seen so far, including Sims and the damned expansionpacks.

how much do you have to download? is it like... 3GB? or, 2? or...?
Iam running this, 1MB internet connection wich i hope can handle it - however the way iam paying for it is - i get 5 GB to use for a month, then i pay some money for that.
If i use over the 5GB limit, i have to buy more MB(GB) for the month for a 1kr/10 MB (1 danish krone buys me 10 mb)
Wall, if you buy the normal retail version you can play HL2 and Counter-Strike: Source, and download any mods that are released. If you want Half-Life: Source(which was also released today apparently) and DoD: Source, then you need Silver. I don't know if it's possible to upgrade from the retail, but I wouldn't try it until you get confirmation because I haven't heard anything about that.
Yep. And wait until you hear this. Even if you buy the special edition of the retail game, you won't get DoD: Source (or the backlog). You can only get it through Steam. Bloody idiots who designed this system...

Valve would rather you buy through Steam. There's no reason not to, and it saves on production costs. So, they offer some goodies through Steam.
If you have a friend who has a better ISP, you could get him to download it and copy the related SteamApps files to CDs for you. Then you can buy it over Steam, close Steam, copy all the files into your SteamApps folder and open it again. Though on second thought he might need a DVD burner since I think the files are too big for regular CDs.
You should go to the HLFallout or PlanetHalflife forums and ask if anyone has tried upgrading to the Silver version from retail.

No, I was more talking about the fact that they force you to do something not everyone can if they want everything. Buying the special edition of the retail will be expensive and you still won't get everything. If they could let you buy the bronze version in stores (which is pretty much what you get) then upgrade via Steam, it'd be a lot better, but no. You either download 4-5GB or so or you pay more to get less. Not to mention of course, that you have to have a creditcard (which I don't, I might add. As a student, I'm not qualified to have one without a fixed income. I can work around it but I shouldn't have to).
It's like they are going out of their way to make to be as annoying as possible. It looks like Vivendi and Valve are not exactly liking eachother, but they could at least try to work together a couple of days instead of making the customers suffer.
Well, I have now linked my cedit card info to my account and right now I am... Unlocking half-life 2 files... Strange, I thought it would download the game before unlocking it, and I'm pretty sure it haven't downloaded it already.
Steam will put things in your My Games list and let you "play" them before they're done; it just sits and waits for the download to actually finish if you try though. You can look at the Monitor screen to see how much is really downloaded.
If you play anything, it stops downloading the rest though, so be wary of that <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Does anyone know whether when DOD:S and TF:S are released, you can buy them individually? I guess I can live without DOD, but it would be nice to buy it later if I could.
Stupid Silver pack.
I don't want HL:Source, I don't care about the original anymore lol. You also get the benefit of the entire back-catalogue of games and mods...wow. Every game I already own, available to download and play! Yeh, thats worth paying god knows how much extra!
Bronze it is. And I may as well buy it in shops to save the download time...
