Touching Is Good...

I got to play w/ a Nintendo DS today :D
Thanks to the handy dandy Nintendo DS Demo Unit Locator I found out that my local EB games had a DS unit on display, so when I went there today to grab my copy of MGS3 I spent about 30 minutes playing around w/ the DS.

OMG.

I wasn't gonna buy one, because I'm on a really really tight budget, but I think now I'm just gonna have to go in debt and have horrible credit history.

It pwns. Sound was suprisingly good, and the touchscreen was perfectly responsive. Lighting wasn't an issue due to the backlight, and there the colors were all very nice.

The demo unit had Metroid Prime Hunters: First Hunt (the multiplayer capable demo that comes w/ the DS) in it, in addition to Pico Chat and the DS configuration stuffs.

When you first turn it on it goes to a menu screen similar to the latest gen of consoles. From here you can use the touch pad to launch the game in the DS cartridge slot, the game in the GBA cartridge slot, use Picochat, scan for any wireless downloads available, and go to the configuration options for time/alarm/etc.

I went to the configuration menus, and they are suprisingly nice, considering what they are for. Very colorful. I found myself thinking it would be a damn shame if no one made a suite of apps to turn the DS into a pseudo-PDA, because w/ the colors and the touchpad and the alarm and all, it'd be really nice to be able to put in appointments too.

But anyway, onto the game! I was a little worried about Metroid Prime on the DS controlling w/ the stylus, and while yes it is a little wierd at first and takes some time to get used to, it is pretty fun.

So... who wants to touch me? ;)

Had me first touch yesterday, man. Yes, the Metroid Demo owns soo much. My friend couldn't get the hang of it, but I picked it up in about 45 seconds.

Oh, and there's something amazingly cool about the new Power button...I'm not sure what, but it's...Cool...Or something...

With an ending line like that on a post like this, you're practically asking to keep your custom title forever

I've never owned a gameboy, PDA, or similar handheld gaming/productivity product in the past, but this DS demo locating thingy interests me...thanks for the link, Doomeh.

I had the same feeling about the cases for the games. They're just... cool. And small.

Are they available for purchase yet or are Nintendo and EB
simply taunting you with their "oddly cool" Power button?

If so.... how much do they cost and when will they hit UK shores?
(And where can I sell a kidney? --- Other than eBay.)

They hit the UK next year sometime, depending on the roll of the Nintendo Europe Release Die.

If it's a six, it'll come out in January.

If it's a three, four or five, sometime in "the first quarter" of 2005.

If it's a one or a two, they'll release fake DSs that spray acid into the user's eyes whenever they press the "on" button.

    Yeah, thanks Nintendo.

Releaseing it right after I bought Macross: Collection, The Sims 2, Half-Life 2, Call of Duty: UO, Star Wars, A new computer.

    Thank you SOOOOO much.

I'm waiting to see how long the battery life is for the PSP before I consider it.

Also, the fact that the PSP doesn't support MP3, and I can't play DVDs on it, means that I won't be using two-thirds of what it's promising as a multimedia device. I'm not re-buying movies just so I can watch them once on a journey and use up all the battery.

It's weird; the DS has gotten a lot of negative press from what I can tell, while the PSP has gotten positive, but I'm still in favour of the DS.
