Iv drawn a marine face and removed the part of the helmet
that overlay his eyes:

Who says they're looking through the visor? The visor probably just takes the visual information and pipes it down to a display they have that IS at eye level.

Why would it do that? And if so, why use a visor at all? 2 regular cameras would work just as well if not better.
