<div class="IPBDescription">Why we should foster good will....</div> I think that people confuse quality of a player with how good their aim is.
While aim is important, as is knowledge of the game, the thing that makes a quality player is their ability to cooperate with the rest of the team and sportsmanship. These qualities are sometimes forgotten by so-called "elite" players who tend to focus on wanting players with good aim or players that know how to exploit fades, over players who are eager to participate with the team and who have a good attitude.
This, in my opinion, is what is currently wrong with NS. It's also what many forumgoers don't want to hear, because it can't be magically fixed by the devs. It has to be fixed by the community. Too many times, the vocal minority will drive new players out by criticising them without any kind of constructive comments.
I can't think of anything worse than playing a new game and then having someone yell, "OMG! You put down a sense first?<!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->? You IDIOT!" without explaining why they made that comment.
Players like that should be reprimanded by devs/constellation/vet players. You cannot foster a sense of team when someone yells at the new folks. Those same players, when reprimanded by people like myself will often state that the n00b should grow thicker skin. That may work fine in the military, but not when you need to bring new people to the game and educated them with an unbiased attitude.
New folks aren't the end of NS. New players are what keeps this game going. These new players will be new contributors in time, money, and community involvement. These are your comrades and should be welcomed, educated, and protected.
I'd like to congratulate the community of #nslearn and #nsguides as they are the people who are doing the most to help this community grow in a healthy and fun way. We should all aspire to help people the way they do.

It's comments like yours that cause people to leave shaking their head wondering why people are so damned unfriendly.
The original post was going to be in response to the <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=85951' target='_blank'>Decline in Player Quality</a> post, but grew into something more.
It may be contrived, but it's not drivel at all. It's a post from someone who cares about the game and wishes folks would raise people up instead of breaking them down.
Every server I've ever admined or had auth on, I've offered to help new people over and over again, heck as well as veterans. Even if theres a question as simple as how long does an armory upgrade take, etc.
We should not only learn to show other players the ropes, but also respect each other much more. If we all communicate with eachother in game and learn to have more fun, the game is more fun. Ever played a round of NS without anyone talking at all except for the comm? the losing team usually all leaves, and the winning team usually stays one more round but doesn't say anything..
This is why certain servers like NSA, Lunix, voogru, simulatrix, mark's or g4b2s have such tight-knit communities. They build the communities with relationships through communication, this might sound like some kind of mushy-mush chick flick, but think about it. if every server had as many good people to play in, the entire game would be better.
just think what comes to mind when you think "good server" besides lack of lag and map rotation.
If you know things about NS that other people don't, help them. It's the nice thing to do.
While I agree that any community needs to be kind to it's new additions (well.. those that are willing to learn and become a part of that community, anyway)... what do you want? Do you want us to go around patrolling servers, babysitting every NSplayer we come across?
My point is that this is a game community, like any other - well, no, I consider the NS community in general to be above that of, say, CS - but beyond general areas such as the forums and IRC, the community will behave like any other community with a sense of competition along with teamwork.

I think most servers will say that if you are new to the game, don't go Gorge or Comm until you have a grasp of what's going down. Or they used to in the good old days. Its pretty much common sense that a builder class is VERY important, and can win or lose a game such as this.
I understand where you're coming from, and people could be a hell of a lot nicer. I personally like to think I'm helpful to people asking questions. Then again, some people are beyond help.
To be fair, if you don't understand the basics of the resource model you could well think you are simply being helpful and opening up an unused chamber.
But when I started NS i found out everything I could about it beforehand, I generally do that with games, more ppl should <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
It just annoys ppl to much when therye trying to have a good game, but some random "n00b" goes comm or drops the wrong chambers.
I agree with helping ppl, but the noobz have to reach theyre hands out for help too tbh. =)
Your comment about vets and clanners who chastize over critical players, I think that there are many many of them who do, and I have seen it happen many times. The fact is thier efforts are in vain if other vets/clanners choose to be the critical players themselfs.
The problems are on both ends of the spectrum.
Well said, feel the same way. Combat is a laugh, but you just don't get the teamplay that Classic NS is capable of producing.
