Ns_hera full plan

Comments!
This is my supposed plan for the rest of the map.

Legend:
Yellow stars are weldables.
Red triangles are resource nozzles.
Green room is the supposed hive room.
Thick orange lines are the edge of the cliff, and the black spaces are 'outside', red is 'inside'.
Two paralell red lines mean jetpackers only (as written), and if an arrow is through them, then it means that marines can pass through that direction without a jetpack.

it's all a little messy, but I'm sure you can grasp the intent of my crayon-work

I love it, but what's the point of the weldable in the bottom right hand corner of the map?
• KassingerKassinger Shades of grey Join Date: 2002-02-20 Member: 229Members, Constellation
Jedisar, are you still trying to map for ns?

Anyway, nice map, but is the cliffy place an actual place were you can play?

Wow. that's uhhh... big? complex? gonna be a hell of a lot of fun to play? you bet! Not sure about the way I'm reading the jetpacking and single direction thingy thou... like, say there's this ventillation shaft, and it has a REALLY strong wind going through it, so that a normal marine can only go in the direction of the wind, but one with a jetpack can go against the wind? or did I completely missinterperet what you meant?

Oh, and that func_weldable in the lower right... what's it purpose? it doesn't look like it's welding an entranceway...
• MerkabaMerkaba Digital Harmony Join Date: 2002-01-24 Member: 22Members, Retired Developer, NS1 Playtester
the weldable in the bottom-right part of the map closes off the three alien vents at the north of the room.

Sorry, the arrow depicts that a marine can jetpack in that direction, but can simply walk off if going in the other direction.

Actually you should just ignore the jetpack symbols as I forgot to put in all of them. There are many more paths which can't be gotten through without the aid of a jetpack, but I missed them when putting the lines in

in the maintence room? Once the marines close them, then bob's have to find another way

Wow Merkaba, that is awesome! The more I see of hera, the more I want to play it. I really like how you have that "big" feeling to the map, without it ever becoming too confusing.

BTW, I was always wondering what that large bumpy area was down on the bottom of your commander maps... cliffs... Sweet.

Yes, I tried to map for Ns...And It looks no where as awesome as even Merk's layout here...I doubt I'd do any better in CS or HL.

I say those two hives on the right might be a little too close, but then what would I know?

This is some really great work. Good to know you're nearing completion.

Heh heh. Maybe someone with actual art skill could reconcile some of the shots up at Merx's RR.org map gallery with the new layout pic, and make something halfway decent looking.

I am not that someone.

If you want to do this, I can tell you what shots go with what map section. Just email me.

I know this is a bit off-topic, but I have to say that the room in the centermost picture in MonsE's montage is one of the coolest and most inspiring and rooms I have seen. That along with hera's generator.

Keep up the great work Merk.

The 'central room'.

The hive room...not much different, but it has a slightly different composition.

Finally, this is an upwards shot of the 2nd finished hive room. No hive pictured, as she was busy signing autographs somewhere. ; )

Finally, here's a picture of the layout *without* alien crawl tubes.

You -are- going to use something other than that hologram, right?
• realityisdeadrealityisdead Employed by Raven Software after making ns_nothing Join Date: 2002-01-26 Member: 94Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
What is wrong with the hologram? I like it.

Matter of personal preference I guess.

Always brings the rocket sequence from HL popping into my head, and I was under the impression that nothing from HL was going to be left in the mod... Or am I wrong?
• MoleculorMoleculor Namer-of-Bob Join Date: 2002-01-24 Member: 9Members
No, you're right. That's why I asked... that holo is from HL, and -always- reminds me of the satelite thing from HL.
• realityisdeadrealityisdead Employed by Raven Software after making ns_nothing Join Date: 2002-01-26 Member: 94Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
I seriously doubt that the team is going to enforce a rule that nothing from HL can make its way into NS. I just think that they encourage not using the valve .wads due to the unrealistic "plastic" feeling of most of the textures... and that Cory's set is what they want the game to look like... But I don't see anything wrong with using the misc hl texture here and there. I have, and no one noticed, obviously. Enforcing a rule like that would be stupid. People should just be heavily discouraged from using the base hl textures to make up your walls and such. There is nothing wrong with using a few halflife textures for misc details, etc. As long as it looks good, that is.

I really don't want to get into this again... I recall a similar conversation about this earlier... I don't remember anyone saying "No Half-Life textures allowed. Period." I think the whole point is just to encourage people to heavily use the NS.wad for most of the geometry and structures in their maps... not to ban the hl.wad.

And besides... what is so bad about being reminded about Half-Life? I understand the fact that NS must have its own unique look and feel too it, but a lot of you act as though you hated the game or something... Launchning that rocket was one of the coolest things I had done in a game at the time.
• MerkabaMerkaba Digital Harmony Join Date: 2002-01-24 Member: 22Members, Retired Developer, NS1 Playtester
Kens right - we're not banning every texture from halflife - just so long as it doesn't make the game *feel* like halflife.

There are some limitations obviously, where NS material isn't enough to completely fill a room, or you need sound effects which we don't have.

But I am going to be replacing that model with an NS specific one. It's just not a very high priority for the moment.
• YolmerYolmer Join Date: 2002-01-25 Member: 84Members
You are using the HL cliffs too, but they don't remind you of halflife at all, because of the red lighting. I think they look really good.
