Steam, Localhost, And Dedicated Servers

If you run a steam dedicated server on the same computer as your client, and you attempt to connect to it by using "connect 127.0.0.1", it gives you errors about expired tickets. However, if you connect to it using your network card's address, ie "connect 192.168.1.50", it works just fine. Anyone know why steam works like this?

Because you're not supposed to join your own dedicated server from the same machine? Regardless of if it works or not it seems like a bad idea.

I'm using it for testing, not as an actual playable server. It's mainly an issue for developers who want to test for bugs that don't show up on listen servers. Still, that's an interesting theory. Valve cripped localhost so the newbies can't join their own servers and lag it. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I wish someone would squash this rumor. I have successfully run a Win32 hlds (first TFC, then NS since it's inception) on my computer AND played client-side from it also with absolutely no issues. This I have done for 2-1/2 years on my present box, and 3 years prior to that on my Dell.

@Sandstorm: I simply connect to my external IP.

I've ran a dedicated server on my machine before, with pings of about 40-60. If I join the server from the same machine, the pings go to about 80-100.
