People always have this sort of nostalgia for the good ole' days; I played another webgame where a portion of the player base kept bemoaning the current state of affairs and insisted that previous incarnations of the game were much more superior, etc. So the admins brought back the old version of the game for awhile, and it was terrible. It was unbalanced, not as complex as the newer versions, and the active playerbase quickly dwindled as a result of returning to an old version of the game.

It wasn't the game itself that made it fun, it was the community. If you like 1.04 so much, my understanding is that there are still servers that run it; you can play to your heart's content there. But please don't try to push back improvements that have been made, the rest of us like playing a game with a semblance of balance.

Oh if only that were true. If I knew of a dedicated 1.04 server with a decent community... well, I can dream.

Please don't accuse me of trying to rollback improvements to the game, because AFAIK, I am guilty of no such act. Sure, I speak my mind when certain topics come up (friggin' R4K), but I can't recall actually saying that the game should be rolled back (at least not recently). I do however wish it would return to its origins as an FTS/RTS hybrid, because I think it has strayed into "FTS with ocassional structure building" terretory.

When combat was introduced it sucked the life out of the game. There was way more combat servers than regular ones. I haven't played NS in years though so I can't see where the game is at.

Most classic servers are better than before since all us low-attention-span kids go play Combat for a quick fix of NS. I enjoy both modes, but classic is more involving, so losses (and wins) matter more. I'd rather not gamble my mood for the next 4 hours on a few rounds of NS.

wish that'd be a rule where there would be like a combat to ns map ratio. say 1 combat map every three ns map or something like that.

If you guys really do miss for the "good old days", go download the 1.04 client from bryswright.com

I played in 1.04 very briefly. i remember it being quite good. however, i went back and played it again about a year ago. needless to say, i was unimpressed.

I have Bry's 1.04 client, but what good is it? There aren't any servers.

Wrong. HL engine simply can't take some things. See also high-poly models making HL choke and die regardless of how leet your computer is.

You guys who like long games, have you heard about Intelligent Design?

I guess you're right... that's pretty bad coding. The smoke in CS cripples almost any PC.

Theres just one thing I hate about the current state of NS

Where 1.04 was a true RTS/FPS hybride, sure it had bugs (hitbox for instance) and unbalanced issues, but you could actually hold areas with buildings. Of course it also had the rush problem, which could be fixed by fixing the targeting of the OC and turrets (and ofcourse give the OC the spikes). The siege was a little to powerfull though. And the sounds were better from turrets and sieges!

NS3.0 has gone way to much into the FPS area for my taste. It lost the true RTS feeling. Also the "comeback" from being almost destroyed is very rare in 3.0. That is what I liked about 1.04, turning the tables against seemingly overwhelming odds.

Due to engine limitations NS doesn't have a varied techtree, that's is this games biggest problem for it's dying RTS part. I surely hope NS2 will be more like a mix of 1.04 RTS and 3.0 FPS. Both had good stuff, but 3.0 is seriously lacking some of the ideas from 1.04. Classes bound to hives is one of them. And to add to the problems, trying to balance two totally different teams. With one based on 3 techtrees and classes VS one based on 1 class with upgrades and lot's of buildings. Is VERY hard.

Compare NS to any RTS out there. It is seriously lacking, but this is mosly engine dependant :/

    Sidenote:
Combat is nothing more then teamfortress with aliens, sure some like it. But it almost killed the (2.0+) other half of the game. A risky thing to do: almost killing 50% of your game <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

I think CO went a long way towards shifting NS away from RTS/FPS hybrid and toward FPS with occasional structure building. Annother problem was the constant ###### about balance, and I'm guilty of this somewhat myself. It seemed to encourage drastic changes in the gameplay which, ultimately, were for the worse IMO.

there is a diference between a long game on pub and in organized play, on pubs, it becomes a long game because you siut in ms with 10 guys with lvl 3 hmg killing everything that gets near, but is unable to get out of base due to millions of OCs etc.
A long PCW atleaast have some fight in i till the end or the comm just sells base to get a new round running, wich would get you banned for all eternity if ou do it on public.
Too bad so many admins sees it as fun camping ms for 45 minutes instead of playing 2 new rounds at that time.

While there certainly was the Alamo factor in those days, the long games were talking about weren't because of Alamos, they were because of constant back and forth fights. And yes, this did happen in pubs, pubs are all I played.

the old days were more fun cause we were all new. it was fresh and we were all.. essentially noobs going at it, thats one of the reasons games lasted so long.. i will say the game has shifted focus from rts to fps.. which i don't like... i loved setting up lil minibases throughout maps, especially on nothing they were helpful with the elevators, and they'd last.. now the only one that lasts is generator on nothing.. pft. give the tf a serious beafing up and the turrents and i think we'd see a swing back to rts. OC's are a joke, i just run and hop over them, once over call for a med and im good. defensive structures don't work anymore ;(
  • NEX9NEX9 Join Date: 2005-03-08 Member: 44299Members
i agree it would be nice to, not have defences tottal block off area's but be slightly beefed up again

a couple of oc's an a dc used to mean marines had to dro pa tf, and a seige gun or two or get a pair og Gl's and have some support

now they jsut run and jump over them, i mean i set them up all good but i hsouldnt have to chase a rine who's backwards bunny hopping past 80 res in defences to kill me to spawn at a diff hive to have him build a phase gate and lock down a hive room

my 100 res in 7 oc a mc and two gorge life should lead to my sucess more offtan and have higher odds at sucess in stoping marine, than his 3 med spams two click on a armory for ammo and a ninja phase gate

Me personally I liked 1.04 vs the current installments.

If I was going to balance the game out, keep the current map changes and do the following

    1. give ohnos's primal scream back.
    2. give lerk spikes make umbra a level 4 weapon
    3. Old Blink!!!
    4. Unlimited JP fuel!
    5. More possible seige zones.
    6. Remove Scent of Fear.
    7. Nerf Xenocide. Make it a natural attack. and less energy requirement.

    I dunno. I liked 1.04. Was fun.
