<div class="IPBDescription">What the cause is and how to fix it</div> This error message is encountered whenever you try to join a server that is running a different version of the game then you have installed.
1. Often this happens when a new version of NS is released and you haven't upgraded yet. Check our <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com' target='_blank'>front page news</a> and our <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns/view?action=files' target='_blank'>game downloads page</a> to make sure you didn't miss an update.
2. You can see what version of the game you're running by launching Steam and seeing what Natural Selection is called in the list (ie, "Natural Selection (beta 5)"). Make sure you are only trying to join servers that are running this version. This is often a problem when we're doing internal testing of a new version that hasn't been released yet and those servers show up in your browser.
3. If you're still having problems, you may want to try re-installing Natural Selection. If you do this, you may want to back up your <b>config.cfg</b> first, if you've added your own customized scripts.
To re-install NS, open up Windows Explorer and find the directory you have Steam installed to (by default it's <b>C:\Program Files\Steam</b>). Then navigate into the "<b>SteamApps</b>" directory, then into your Steam e-mail address directory (your Steam "user name"), then into "<b>Half-life</b>", then into the "<b>ns</b>" directory. You may see an "<b>nsp</b>" directory instead of or along with your NS directory. You'll want to delete both of these directories (keep in mind you'll lose any screenshots or custom maps you've downloaded as well, so move these to your Windows desktop or other place for safe-keeping first if you desire).
After deleting those folders, you can <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns/view?action=files' target='_blank'>re-install the current version of NS</a>. After doing this, you should no longer have this error.
Good luck, and let us know how you do!

edit:
i even re-installed HL, updates, CS, updates, and NS V3 B5, then installed steam!
weirdly, steam doesn't detect my NS
It also doesn't detect my CS mod
maybe that's y the dll differs, it's using my half life's client dll and comparing to the server's NS client dll
i'm trying to think of a way to start steam with NS instead of HL. i tried putting
-game NS in the properties while in steam and doing it on HL
didn't work
some help please?

Uninstall everything, then install steam. Enter your CD-Key and download HL via steam. Then install NS/CS or whatever.
This will install beta 5 no matter what you have done before, so start at the begining!
1) Install Steam (Get the one with the HL cash if you can), if you have already installed Steam you may skip this step
2) Play HL Via Steam (just load up the training mission and then quit)
3) Search Your Hard Drive for NS and NSP
4) Deleate ALL Folders with these names.
4a) If you have a previously working install of an earlier version that you wish to keep: You can rename all NS folders to NSBUP and leave the NSP Folders alone.
4b) If you have a previous install of NS, and wish to keep your configs, cimply copy your .cfg filles (normaly just config.cfg and userconfig.cfg, to your desktop)
5) Close Steam.
6) Run the Beta 5 installer (ns_install_v3_b5.exe)
6a) Point the installer at Steam\SteamApps\Your@email\Half-Life
6b) If you backedup your config files, now is the time to move them to your NS folder.
7) Launch Steam
8) Change your filters so that the point at <b>Natural Selection(Beta 5)</b> Instead of <b>Natural Selection (Beta)</b>
9) Connect and play.
10) If you get any errors (map.bsp, client.dll, or <b>ANYTHING</b>:
a) Search your HDD for NS, there should only be a dir called NS in your Steam\SteamApps\Your@email\Half-Life\NS, unless you backed up a previous install.
b) If it is ANYWHERE elese, try moving it to the correct place, or simply deleate it and start again.
If you still get map.bsp errors, or client.dllrors, start from step 3 again.
If you are POSITIVE that you hvae folowed the directions correctly, then redownload ns_install_v3_b5.exe from another location.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
simpler than everything that was said before
simply install the ns v 3 b 5 straight into the half life folder under your user name account within the steam folder.
that should fix almost everything
later on it will come out under the "third games party"
enjoy

The real question is, why are you being a twit about it? <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
just finding it funny.
cmon.
people like that tick me off (look at my spelling and you will find out why). However, if you are gona be anal about something, and you mess up, we get to laugh at you.
nuff said.
It is kinda like a skater going off on how they are gona pull this cool stunt. And then falling over just standing up.
do a search for NS, if you only come up with one location and it is in steam\stamApps\your@email\half-life then you are golden, one commen thing is for it to look like:
steam\stamApps\your@email\half-life\ns\ns
Also, 3rd party games is simply at the bottom of your playgames list (scroll all the way down)
Are you sure it isn't:
C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\snypawolf\half-life\NS\ns
Did you run HL1 before you installed NS? How are you even starting it up and getting the cilent is different message if it doesn't show up on your steam menu?
doubled checked the directory but it still happens.
anymore ideas anyone??
theres my directory
Well, it shouldn't stop it working I suppose. It's a bit fugly though.
What version do you have installed?
edit: fixed. i had installed into ....\half-life\ns\ instead of ....\half-life\
