Cant Select Menu Options

I've recently installed the latest NS (beta 5 I believe) and I realized that I am unable to make any selections using the popup menu while in-game.
I can change weapons using mousewheel and number keys with no problems, but for things like alien upgrades and marine commands the popup menu appears when I hit the button, I have a mouse pointer, the selections get highlighted but nothing happens when I click.
If I'm alien I can use hotkeys to get my upgrades, but if I'm marine I'm out of luck. That's why I have to go alien in combat maps, on the Marine side I'm stuck with a basic gun the entire time no matter how many points I accumulate.
I have a 2.5GHz scpu, 1Gb of RAM and a Geforce FX5900 video card using the latest Nvidia drivers. All of my other games work fine, but NS seems to have some menu issues. I've also noticed that even though I unchecked "show hints" in the multiplayer window I still get a lot of information on the screen.
any suggestions?
