OK, good old jerks trying to make more money and hiding the free one (see: realplayer).

Ok, there are 2 programs, napster and napster light.

    Napster:
    Cost: $9.95/month
    Cost per song: $0.99
Gets you access to a bunch of radio stations, wishlists, cordinate with other users, and the ability to PAY for songs at $0.99 a song. What you get free for 30 days is the radio and other things.

    Napster Light:
    Cost: Free/month
    Cost per song: $0.99
Just let's you pay for music and download it, no radio stations or such.

    more in depth comparison <a href='http://www.napster.com/tv/comparison.html' target='_blank'>here</a>.

So no, no free music, just free radio and such. Which you can get for free using winamp radio and such. Woop de do.

I downloaded loads of songs off napster. About 1Gb over a few days.

When i transfered them over to my other pc they didn't play because i didn't have the track licence on my other pc. So you can download as much as you like, but all of the content is encrypted using Windows Media Players latest DRM system. You need a licence otherwise the content cannot be decrypted.

So software such as Nero can't write the tracks as actual audio tracks, minidisc players can't read them, other pc's don't have the licences.

I wonder if you could convert them to another format, cause something like a wav would lose all that data, then you could convert back >_>

No. Music converters cant read them either. Only programs which support microsoft DRM can if you have the right licence. However there is always the idea of recording the output but that would take so damn long, and to be honest.. Not worth it.

DRM's a scary, scary thing. Happily though if we all avoid it like the plague there's not much damage they can do. DRM got you down? BOYCOTT! Best way to beat it.
