Massive Fps Troubles

I can't take it anymore.. my fps seemsto go down with every new build. It started at around 60 during beta3, and is now down to 30 or less. Comanding, I'm lucky to get 10fps. It pretty much makes the game unplayable..

Any suggestions? I've tried everything in <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=8100' target='_blank'>http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=8100</a>
and a bunch of stuff that wasn't.

System Specs:
XP Home SP1
p4 2.0ghz
786mb ram
Geforce fx5200 256mb ram
more HD space then I'll ever use (150gb+ free)
integrated audio, and network
Omega drivers 6.1771, iirc

Whats weird here is that I get the same fps running my normal resolution (1152x864) and running 640x480.
Not much is going on in the background, cpu usage wise... 95% of the time its all in the system idle task.

Oh btw, don't even suggest installing SP2, I won't do it.

check first if you don't have any spyware, virus in background...
You can check if the anti-aliasing has been turned on...

    SP2 is crap <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

No clue on yoru FPS issues devicenull, but damn glad to get some support on my hatred for SP2. Peek at my <a href='http://www.modns.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=1239' target='_blank'>Windows XP Service Pack 2, Is it REALLY REALLY necessary?</a> thread on the modNS.org Forums. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I think it might be an old problem I saw from quite some time ago...I get the same problems.

    1.2ghz athalon processor
XP home (I think,I got home and office at my house, dunno about SPs.Might have 1 or 2...)
    512 mb ram
Radeon 2900 SE PCI (bus) 128 mb video card-drivers are COMPLETLY up to date
Too much HD space (quite alot.Got like 70% of it free.)
intergreated audio (pretty damn good for something that came with it)

I can tell ya this, the on board card runs HL and NS better, and I can't remove the radeon or the on board, because one won't work without the other.I don't wanna go restart,go into bios, change from PCI video,to onboard, then restart again, take longer to start up due to the reduced video ram,and play it,then have to restart, switch from on board to PCI,restart again, and load up everything again just to play HL2...

My comp. has more power then it needs (I got an old power supply in it that provides more power then my TV normally uses, and my cooling system consists of 5 fans, and a heat sink bigger then a 2 liter. As well as a fire resistant comp. tower like they HAD at fire stations to protecta against the heat incase one came in and set his gear down after a fire and it was still hot,and a bit too close to the comp.)

Had the same problem after I did a XP upgrade.

Turns out that XPs built in firewall conflicted with my 3rd party firewall.
No warnings or nothing so it took a while for me to figure it out.
It might be as simple as that.

Also. I have noticed that the latest detonator drivers for nvidia based cards are not that good to use with fx5700 and older cards. For some reason they get a really big performance drop. 56.xx seems to be the most stable detonator for older fx cards.

I can try lower version drivers.. I don't think its them though, seeing as I get 30-40 fps in HL2 with everything on DX8 defaults.

I tried switching to DX mode last night, and it didn't do anything.

Hl is very cpu bound game, you cant hope to run nsb5 smoothly with 1.2ghz or 2ghz cpus... If you are using ati cards remember to set "ati_subdiv 0 and ati_npatch 0". Get better cpus or overclock...

I notice you have nvidia drivers..... and an nvidia card....

    1. Omega drivers increase image quality but reduce performance

    2. A 5200 is a fairly old card... every driver after the 4xxx series will actually DECREASE performance on that card...

Try to find an old 41 series driver, i bet you a cookie ull boost ur fps a bit...

ALso go into settings and put em on performance, no AA/AF no vsync... ect...

    Good luck

Omega drivers come in two versions, one for image quality, one for performance. I got the performance ones

I'll try the lower version drivers though

All the settings are on performance
