Entire Ns Install'in/download Steps Please Help!

OK, ive playd NS at my friends house too much, and now i have to get it myself at my house bcuz its just sucha good mod. ANyways, i keep having trouble once i want to join a game. Did i download everything wrong or somthing? It would be so helpful if some1 could put a 1-5 step (or somthing along the lines) to help me get hte game. HEre's what ive tried
1. I installd my half life
2. downloaded steam
3. downlaoded the 3.0 beta client
4 OPEned steam, hit servers, doulbe clickd an NS game to try n join
but before i can hit connect or join (i stil dont no i get stuck here) the whole "Steam/ Browse games" screen comes up (and the join game screen closes)
Yes, im acomplent noob , but some help would b seriously appreciated
*ive heard you ahve to run some of half life to make sure ns gets proper files or somthing along that line- ive run half life many times, before n after dling steam

After you've installed Steam, you need to join a game of Half Life to update it. Once you've updated Half Life via Steam THEN install your NS.
