This is odd.
I'm not sure what is going on, but I think I may have had my Steam account banned for some reason. About 2 seconds ago, when I tried to log in to my Steam account, it will not work. Just FYI, I'm using my same username and password. I went into the "Retrieve a lost account" section and when I typed in my username to go get my password, it says that my account does not exist. I don't know if maybe this is a network-wide thing, or just my account. Oh, and before you say anything, I have never hacked and my copy of HL2 is legal.

Subject: Steam
To Whom it May Concern,
I am sending you this email with some complaints that that I have
about your Steam client. Today I went to go play some Counter-Strike
Source with some friends and what do I get? An error message saying
that I can't connect. I thought that it was just my computer, until I
posted a message on some forums that I frequent, and people are saying
that they are having problems as well. My other complaint is about the
Steam friends network. The Steam Friends is a good concept, but you
have failed to make it practical. Whenever I want to organize a game,
it so happens that every single time, it tells me that it is down for
maintenance. If you have to take the Steam friends network down for
maintenance almost twice a day, then you might want to think about
removing it or explaining to the several hundred thousand Steam users
why the network is always undergoing maintenance. AOL Instant
Messenger does a better job than Steam Friends, and I do not like AOL.
Do not take this letter the wrong way. Steam is a work in progress,
work that has been going on for a little over a year now. All I ask is
that Valve tries a little harder to maintain what could be an awesome
game organization client.
Sincerely,
********

Have you tried unplugging your Internet connection to go into Offline mode? Or is a logout required to do so?
Its a logout. I can't even log in to play offline, which sucks even worse.
they need to keep this stuff from happening... i guess they don’t know what redundancy is
