Installing Ns With Hl2...

SeTTsSeTTs Join Date: 2005-02-01 Member: 39407Members
If there will be an adition of NS for the source engine coming out any time soon, please save me the trouble of installing and updating, etc... an tell me.

But on to my problem. Right now i have HL2 installed, and HL1 is not installed. Do i need to instal HL1 to play NS, or do i have to completely reinstall it?

Saying i do have to re-instal HL1 (which i am pretty sure i will have too) do i also have to get a new steam acount or will my old one work?

Thats all for now, but i am pretty sure i will be asking more about installing... cuz im almost 100% there is no NS for source (unless there is a 3rd party making it, which i am almost sure of. If anyone is making one and has it released (and its half decent) where can i get it?)

Yes, you need to install Half-Life 1 to play NS, but you don't need to register a new steam-account.

There are plans for NS2 and NS:Source, but it will take quite some time before they will be released.

Right now, Half-Life 2 and NS have nothing to do with each other and are completely seperate ballparks all together. Yes, it will show up but there is no "Half-Life 2 Browser". If you select "Half-Life 2" in the browser filter, it will not show up because NS is not running on anything HL2.

Right, thats probably why NS still is not working, i just installed hl, updated it, then installed NS and tried to play ns... then i screwed around with the folders and such again and totaly screwed it up again so i have to reinstall it...

aaannnd should i be installing hl1 in the same hard drive has hl2? does it make a difference if i dont?

Last question (hopefully) Can someone just write me a step by step installing NS for dummies or something, because clearly i am way to incompetant to figure it out.

Hello SeTTs,

This is what I did;

I'm going to presume basic stuff like you have lots of space free on your hard disc drive.

1) I installed Half-Life 2 from the retail DVD version, this put steam on aswell. Don't mess with folders or directories.

2) Because I owned a CD key for Half-Life I registered that with steam and downloaded Half-Life. The download and install process through steam takes care of where it needs to go.

3) After Half-Life is installed, you need to play through the Hazard Course (training level) in Half-Life.

4) Install Natural Selection beta 5. Again don't mess with folders and directories, the install process takes care of everything.

5) Run steam and Natural Selection appears on the 'Play Games Menu'

That's it, it's all I did and everything works fine for me.

Hope this helps.

*sigh* Someone should sticky this.

QUOTE (Thansal's Guide On How To Friken Install NS V3.0 Beta 5)

This will install beta 5 no matter what you have done before, so start at the begining!
1) Install Steam (Get the one with the HL cash if you can), if you have already installed Steam you may skip this step
2) Play HL Via Steam (just load up the training mission and then quit)
3) Search Your Hard Drive for NS and NSP
4) Deleate ALL Folders with these names.
4a) If you have a previously working install of an earlier version that you wish to keep: You can rename all NS folders to NSBUP and leave the NSP Folders alone.
4b) If you have a previous install of NS, and wish to keep your configs, cimply copy your .cfg filles (normaly just config.cfg and userconfig.cfg, to your desktop)
5) Close Steam.
6) Run the Beta 5 installer (ns_install_v3_b5.exe)
6a) Point the installer at Steam\SteamApps\Your@email\Half-Life
6b) If you backedup your config files, now is the time to move them to your NS folder.
7) Launch Steam
8) Change your filters so that the point at Natural Selection(Beta 5) Instead of Natural Selection (Beta)
9) Connect and play.
10) If you get any errors (map.bsp, client.dll, or ANYTHING:
a) Search your HDD for NS, there should only be a dir called NS in your Steam\SteamApps\Your@email\Half-Life\NS, unless you backed up a previous install.
b) If it is ANYWHERE elese, try moving it to the correct place, or simply deleate it and start again.

If you still get map.bsp errors, or client.dllrors, start from step 3 again.
If you are POSITIVE that you hvae folowed the directions correctly, then redownload ns_install_v3_b5.exe from another location.

I think im gunna have to change my name or something cuz this is getting embarasing... about 10 posts ago... sigh....

Edit: Could this be a possible path for it? X:\Steam\your@account.com\Steamapps\half-life

could be... But first try to play half-life1 thru steam... If you can open a singleplayer half-life1 game; then it means you installed it correct, and thirdparty mod support is ready...

After that you can search for a folder called half-life including hl.exe... that's where you should install ns...

Ummm... you are not trying to install HL1 to steam with old HL1 CDs are you?.. if yes thats not the way...

You should see half-life 1 in games section of steam; colored if it is installed or dark green if it is not... find half-life in Steam's games menu and double click it... Steam will auto-download and install it; if your account has access to it... If you dont have access; It will ask you to purchase it...

If you dont see it there; It really is weird...

Did you installed steam with HL2 DVDs or with the steam installer at website?...

i am trying to instal hl1 via the cd that i bought. like in 1998 when the game came out. your telling me that if i want to install it i have to download and pay for it? ok, asuming that is the way i have to do it, and i hl1 does not show up in the games section (which IS the case) WTH am i supposed to do now??

i will give this a more in depth look tomorrow, as i do work in the morning and i dont feel like **** my bloody time away with this any more tonight...

Thanks for the help though.

No Im not saying like that exactly...

1) You can not install HL1 from that CD... You have to let steam auto-download and install it...

2) If you already bought old HL1... You can use the CD-KEY that came with it to register it to Steam... When it asks for you to purchase there is also an option that you can enter your old CD-KEY... You can give it a try; although generaly these old keys are stolen with key-gens...

If it says your Key is beeing used; You will have to buy a new one to play third-party HL1 mods...

3) The HL2 game you bought is probably the bronze eddition (only includes HL2 game and CS:S)... If your HL1 key fails; you can upgrade your HL2 package to silver with 10 dolars extra payment... That will give you access to all Valve games and mods released before HL2; which also includes HL1...

So, what you have to do now is to check these two things;

Open Games Browser window of steam... Check the black button near the Half-Life section...

If it says Play game then it means HL1 is installed and ready to play...

If it says Install game then it means You have access to HL1 and can install it by clicking the button...

Finally if it says Purchase then it means you dont have an access to it; and you have to enter CD-KEY or buy it... You have two options here;

a) You can try to enter your old CD-KEY. click the Register a product I already own... button on the bottom left... enter your CD-KEY... If everything goes right you will have access to HL1 game and the black button will turn to Download&install... You can install it by clicking that button...

b) If your old CD-KEY fails (already beeing used, etc...) You need to buy HL1... But instead of giving it 30 dolars... You can upgrade your HL2 package to silver by paying 10 dolars; Which will also give you access to HL1...

just go buy a cd key off of ebay

or pay a professional computer geek to install ns for you hah
• SeTTsSeTTs Join Date: 2005-02-01 Member: 39407Members
Ok... lets look at the pros and cons of that.

buying a CD off of ebay:

Pros:
I get a new cd key

Cons:
-Large chance that the cd key is currently in use
-The seller could easily use the packaging that he has to get that key reset back to himself
-Potentialy more expensive
- probably is being sold because that key has been banned from valve.

Paying a geek to install it
Pros:
-I get my already bought material installed properly

Cons:
-Will cost more then any sane person would pay
-Chance that it just cant be installed and he charges me anyway.
- The fact that i have to hire some jerk come in and do it for me
- The fact that this jerk is also a nerd, and will more then likely have a really nasty BO problem which will result in me getting charged for assault.

Best option id say is still upgrading to silver.
